How wide of an area are you searching? If you have a 4 hour drive I would think there would be more than two or three DSM's on the route. Understanding that time is an issue just be sure that you don't rush into a deal that you might regret.

I would search around, I paid $4500 for my 98 TSi with 72k miles and a bunch of mods.

I set it at 50miles from when I do a search. I go to school at WVU, its a lot of farmlands on the way home. My mom is loaning me the money, and since she is, she HAS to be a part of buying it and wants to go along to make sure its a good deal and all, so I cant be driving all over, otherwise Id buy a oneway ticket and buy the all black GSX I found in florida. I found a few more in the past hour, GS's though, and theyre a lot cheaper than the other ones Ive been finding. I dont understand the way these dealerships price their cars...

Christmas may come early... I found a black 97 GST vert on the dsmtuners classifieds. He is about an hour away from me tops and I have already emailed him about meeting up next week. The only thing I have to get around is that since my mom is loaning me the money she has a lot of pull, and she wants me to buy from a dealer. Hopefully shell budge. :rocks:

It's an Eclipse GSX. So is this a good deal or does it have too many miles? Haven't really gotten a straight answer yet.

just curious but why do people say "don't worry about crankshaft" alot? Is it not that major of a problem to get fixed or what?

I believe you mean "crankwalk". Crankwalk CAN be a major problem(like pretty much completely destroying your engine), if left alone for too long, but if caught early, can be fixed relatively easially. The only complaints you hear about crankwalk are from the people who get it, and if you look at the percentages (4 to 10% for second gens avg.) its not all that common. But it also depends on how you drive your car. If you drag or street race all the time, your engine will be much more prone to crankwalk. A commuter will fare much better against it. i myself have a 98 tsi with 116k miles running strong. and thats nothing. ive heard of people going over 200k without any signs of crankwalk. if you seach the forums, there are a few discussions that can give you much more info on detecting crankwalk, probability, and damage caused by it. just remember to be good to your car and give it what it wants, and itll be good to you.

And back on topic... go with what your looking for. performance=1g, looks=2g. i personally like the way 2g's look and will take the few extra hundred pounds that go with it. while it may be true that 2g's cannot be the fastest dsms out there, they can come pretty damn close given the right mods and a willing soul. also, if you are worried about performance or crankwalk, you can always do what everyone else does, and give it a 6-bolt swap.
:talon:

I paid $7k for my 97 gst with 90k miles two years ago...I got crankwalk at 97k miles, swapped a 6bolt on it and then sold the car for $4,500....like apeximprt said, 2g are very sexy cars, I loved my 2g...but now i love my awd 1g which i got for 2,400 and its clean.

I'd say...be patient and find yourself a 6bolt 2g awd...black on black...hmmm sexy!

as for this being a good deal... no. 6 grand is a bit much for a car. and just for you men... FEMALES ARE NOT ANY NICER TO THEIR CARS THEN YOU ARE. chances are that things werent kept as tiddy as you think and it doesnt matter whether shes 16 or 75... regular oil changes may have been irregular... timing may have never been changed or checked... so on and so forth. and since youve said that you dont know much about cars... please please please buy yourself something a bit less expencive for a dsm. find this same car for 2k less and your set. it will take time and alot of looking but in the end it will most likely be worth it. my 97 gst had 118k on it for $6500"lightly modded, never raced" or so he said... blew the motor within 2k miles. just my input, but best of luck with whatever you decide *Kat*

there is no differnece between a first generation and a second generation then the ones you chose to be important. a difference in looks... your opinion as to which you like, performance... yours yet again. there are ups and downs to all years yet its like a paint pallet, if you feel that you like the 6bolt engine over the 7 bolt yet you like the 2g body over the 1g... make what youw ant happen. isnt that what america is about?? gettin what you want?? there are hondas that have basterized the 4g63 engine and are now powered by them... just goes to show that where theres a will theres a way. in the end its in your hands. the topic of 1g vs. 2g has an infinant number of different arguments for both sides yet its what you want that wins in the end. *Kat*

Ok, I settled on a 2g. I found a '95 talon tsi for $1700.
It has a bent core support and bent radiator.
Are these easily fixable problems that you could do for under $500? How much are we talking to replace those things?
He says body has 198k and motor 150k....
Could I fix this thing up and have a solid car?
Thanks.

Check turbo for shaft play, have a compression check done. Also check how the tranny shifts. If it all checks out good than yea I would buy it and low ball him to like 1200. Get a quote on the radiator. And use that as a barganing tool.

I bought my 97 GSX in June from a dealer for $8k. Everything is in great condition, not to mention a brand new alternator in it. It has 67.8k miles on it currently. The body is in awesome condition, no rust or anything. KBB says $7.3k for it (excellent condition). There are only super minor touches that could be made and that would cost under $20. I already replaced the only things that bugged me.

If I sold, I'd hate to lose out on the money I paid when it was only a few months ago. Plus, I live in an area where there are many people that like to mod their cars so I'm thinking I'd still be able to sell for the same price or a little less? ...if I intend to sell at all..

You want a good condition 2gb GSX, you gotta pay.....then just wait till it crankwalks on you....that one will blind side your finances to the tune of about $5,000 bucks....then at about 130K miles when the tranny starts grinding 2nd because it has had a long and hard service life, then it starts popping out of fourth while just cruising.....and your 5-8K deal, just turned into a 20K nightmare.....and then lets see what you would let your pride and joy GSX go for WTF ...........You could only be so lucky to find a fresh car for a decent price.

They continue to hold value because their existence is forever deminishing.....and DSM's were never offered AWD anywhere else but the U S of A.....Duh= Classic :tease:

Get one and enjoy it while you can :thumb:

Okay, got another one for you guys. I don't really feel like dealing with a project car right off the bat, I want something that will at least run decent for a while.

Found a '96 talon tsi with 98k on it.
Said he'd let it go for $4500, but tranny has some problems, it pops out of fourth sometimes.
He also has been racing in on the track. He said if you stay under redline it's not that bad for the engine.

In your guys' opinion, how much does racing it reduce the value?
If i got it for like 4k, and tuned the engine up would this be a solid car? 3.5 hrs away...

Exterior is black and very clean.

Whats up guys, it's been quite a while since i've owned a DSM, and just been around the general car scene altogether. Will you guys take a gander at this car i'm considering, and give me your thoughts on if it's an ok deal? I originally told myself I wasn't going to get another DSM unless it was AWD, but i'm starting to lose my will. My main concerns with this is the lower compression #'s although they're even, and the rear conversion. Not exactly a typical DSM owner mod, so it may have been wrecked. I think the compression was mid 150's in the old car.

Input...? http://www.orldsm.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10179

Looks like it has a very nice body and it has the basic mods you would need to start with the good stuf right off the bat. It would cost you 3500 bucs just to do most of the mods he has done. As long as the car runs good and doesn't have any engine or trans porblems then it is more than fair for 3500. 140 psi isn't that low for compression could be better but like I said drive it and seehow it runs.

Even though I am not a big 1g fan, the car looks great. It is rare that you find one that looks that good. If you are not that good with Dsm's, I would suggest taking a mechanic with you. Just to make sure there are not things wrong with the car that you can not see.

Great luck. I like the car. Man that car is clean.

If you get it you can take it to the tampa meet on the 26th of this month.
