The Official "What's this DSM worth?" Thread

I agree with Defiant.

The easiest way to check if the car is "worth it" is to check the Blue Book value. If they're asking higher than BB value, than you have to ask yourself if it's worth it. Asking people here will only give you conflicting opinions, and in most cases, people here would only buy the car if it was way below BB anyway - we're a bunch of cheap bastards. So all you're going to hear is "I wouldn't spend more than $1-$2k on a 1G DSM", which you shouldn't always listen to. Because 1G AWD cars are not easy to find in certain parts of the country like they are in others.

Instead of asking us, just check the BB value and make your own decision. We can't make it for you. The only REAL feedback you can get here is asking about how much repairs will cost to get a car running good in order to help you in your decision.

I say the most accurate value can be gleaned from eBay's "recently completed" auctions. It'll tell you what real people are really paying for real cars, not what value KBB thinks something should be retaining out of its MSRP after so many years/miles and according to whether there's a hole in the roof and if you ordered the shiny wheels or not.

ebay things always go for cheaper though

I beg to differ. Items on eBay many times end up at prices higher than the standard value (KBB, NADA, Other pricing guides). I have personally purchased items on eBay and paid more than the standard worth because that is what I was willing to pay. I believed that the item was worth the given price which I paid.

Ok, I found this car at the junkyard, I don't know the year, but it doesn't have popups, and it has the dildo-looking shift knob - so I'm guessing it's a 92? Anyways, it's red with perfect body, perfect paint, very good interior except for some pieces that have been robbed of the console. The odometer reads 112K miles, and under the hood, it looks like nothing has been modded, the air can is still there, heat shield, etc. Only thing gone is the battery.

Ok - here's the bad - I asked what was wrong with it, and he said something with the wiring. They had it in their shop for a couple weeks and couldn't figure it out. So I have no way of really knowing anything about the car. I could find the wiring problem, fix it, and realize that there are internal problems as well.

So my questions is whether or not it's worth $400, and if I should trade my busted up 95 GS for it (my 95 needs a new front bumper, sunroof, fender, misc other pieces, and it also jumped timing, so it needs a new head)

See, I don't think of it that way. Too much time, and too big a mess. I think of it as buying it for $400, getting it running, and selling it for up to $3,500.

But I'm trying to decide how much of a pain it'll be to fix an unknown wiring problem. Could need a whole new harness, for all I know, and that's something I don't think I'd want to deal with. But could be something simple too.

Lol, selling it for 3500 bucks. If a shop tried to fix it, there is probably more wrong that some messed up wiring. I'd buy and part if I had the room to do it.

 A dealership here got $3,500 for a 90 GSX with almost 200K miles and a burned up clutch and turbo. DSMs are worth a lot here.
People up there must be a few fries short of a happy meal or something

Damn..i got my 90 tsiawd with 90k miles for 1800. Only thing it needs is brakes. WTF Guess there is 1 reason to be happy to be in michigan.

damn well. I've been in the market for AWD turbo for months... lowest price running 2400 for a gsx with 150,000ish miles. :notgood:

I just got a 91 GSX (smokes like a mother) for $80 :D ...complete....but yeah even $400 is good for a AWD that is all there...

Holy Crap, 80 bucks... Good find man, i wish i can find stuff like that. OMG :thumb:

Ok, I just talked to the guy selling it and got the whole scoop. I guess that someone robbed part of the wiring harness, ripped a chunk of it out from where the fuse box is. The guy said it was in the shop for a couple weeks and they were trying to match up all the wires correctly.

Sooo....does this sound like a fixable problem? Or would it need a whole new wiring harness? Maybe just an actual Mitsu technician working on it?

I'm no wiring genius, but could you not find a parts car with a unhacked harness, or find someone parting out, pay him something reasonable for it, and just swap it?
The part alone would be worth buying it, you could also porbably sell it for more than $400 to someone looking for a "project".
