I bought my 1g stock and started work from the ground up. . .
I've spent about 3700 on it already and I bought it for 2000. even with a new paint job and all the other mods I plan to do it will still be about 2000 more for them and I'll have exactly what I want. ( less than 14k)
I'd recommend doing the same, it's hard but rewarding and you have a deeper understanding of what everything is. for instance the symborski shifter kit on that car is a couple of metal bushings. . . not a serious mod. . .
as far as 1g or 2g goes:
I'd go for 1g, not simply because I'm rooting for the home team but, I was in your place at one point and I did about 4 months of researching (and daydreaming) and even though I really wanted a 2g (they're perty!) I got the 1g and I don't regret it one bit the more I find out about the strange problems and quircky things the 2gs have. . .
but they are nice-lookin' and pretty much the same thing. . .
