Something is probly wrong yes. But 1500 isn't bad at all really. I'd say buy it, but someone should check this car over for you. There are a bunch of dsmers from ohio so maybe one of them will come by and check it out..

97 GSX Eclipse with tons of aftermarket parts. 2.3L Stroker Motor JE Pistons Eagle Rods. Fresh Rebuild less than 2000mi! Fresh Rebuilt Presision aftermarket turbo 60 Trim, huge front mount Intercooler. Custom intercooler piping. Ported and Polished head with 1mm oversize valves. Block good for 650HP! No Joke! Pushes 25PSI on pump gas! if you want the baddest eclipse in NWA this is it! super fast! full Tein coilover Suspension with strut and swaybars. 18" MB wheels. Drilled and Slotted Rotors.... Now The Bad.... The front differential went out so the trans needs rebuilt or replaced.

Yeah do you think its a good deal or i could find better only thing the guy says that is wrong with it is the transmission is out the front wheels won't spin so i assume the back wheels still do and he wants $5500 for it which i would offer 5k for it.

And how much do you think it would cost to fix the transmission or would it be cheaper just to replace it with a used one?

It dosent look to be to bad of a deal. If you can get it for $5k. Its definitly got alot of money stuck into the motor.

I think thats high for a car that needs a new tranny. Since its 2.3l it would be best to get a built tranny. Thats at least 1500 and up depending on what is done. I would not buy a car I could not drive unless I knew the guys selling it. I would say do a compression test and talk him down. What pistons and rods are in it and what is he using for tuning?

So a stock tranny with a ACT 2600 clutch would not be good for this car? cause if i got it im thinking off getting a stock tranny and getting a ACT 2600 clutch for it.

general concensus is that if you have a stroker motor then you should have an upgraded tranny. i mean, if you have a built car in the first place then i would assume a built tranny would be a necessity. but the deal doesn't sound bad at all. How many miles on the chassis?

Not sure how manys on the body i will have to email them and ask. And how hard is it to change out a tranny on a AWD compared to a FWD cause i never had done a AWD before.

Also how much is a price on a stroker motor if one was to buy one ?

I would definitely shoot a lower offer than that seeing as you need to put some money to get it moving. But a good find indeed.

Ok im going to try to offer him 4k for it. I don't really want to put 5k down on another DSM. I already invested 9k in to other dsm cars i still got

Ok, here is what is going on. First off, i live in michigan and have been looking for a newer, faster, and better looking GSX than my 95gsx. After some thorough searching I can across a red 97gsx with 93,xxx miles. At the price of 5950, with a great list of mods already done to the car i quickly put a refundable down payment on the car to reserve it.

The cars mods include a 2.3L stroker, GT30r, DSMLink v2, and supporting mods. Not only that but an 11.97 (@117 and 25-26psi) timeslip on street tires to go with it. It is red in color, lowered with some nice 17" rims on it. In a perfect world i was going to drive it back from Delaware, swap my TRE stage 2 into it and have an amazing summer car, but we all know the world, and DSM for that matter, are not perfect.

I recently found a thread started by the previous owner that stated he found Brass shavings in oil filter. With that being a little over two months ago, the previous owner told me that he drove it 2,000 miles after that oil change, before he traded it into the dealer.

I am planning on being there Monday or Tuesday to check the car out and take it home, but i would be screwed if the car died on the way back. I'm hoping that the car still has enough life to make the 850 mile journey, and i will try to baby it. I know that these metal (brass colored) shavings are nothing but bad news, but I think that even after the money for a bottom end rebuild it would still be worth it, especially if the crank can be saved. Even though it would be nice to be able to talk the dealer down to around $5,000.

I had the dealer run a compression test on the car with the following results...

Cyl 1. 161 psi
Cyl 2. 160 psi
Cyl 3. 152 psi
Cyl 4. 162 psi

At first I was like :(. I don't know exactly how many miles are on the build because the previous owner only had it for ~12k miles, and the motor was already in it when he got it. But after thinking about it, and realizing that i didn't specify that the car was supposed to be warm, i asked the dealer if it was. He said no. I'm working on getting a warm test. Is this compression good for cold? It seems to me it is.

So ultimately all i am looking for is what YOU would do in this situation. I'm sick of having a slow, poor painted, monster truck looking gsx. If i can get it home I will be storing it for the remainder of the winter, and then my friend and I will drop the pan and check the bearings.

All in all i am excited, and scared at the same time. Here are a couple pics.

Can anyone tell from these pictures if it is a 6 or 7 bolt? I forgot to ask. :nono:

are you drunk?!??

6 bolt swap super clean with a 30 r and almost p compression......under 6k?!??!??!?!?!??!

if it has bronze shavings thats probably bearings....depending on how bad they are you may be able to just swap out for new ones. Is that a bolt on turbo?

buy the damn thing id say

buy the damn thing

That was a pretty quick post, did you catch the part about the shavings, which i am thinking are either the main bearings or connecting rod bearings. At the very least the engine will have to be pulled and the bottom end worked on.

Yes bolt on.

Edit: i see you edited to mention the shavings.

Ok, so i am going to buy the car, just a few more questions.

How much do you guys think it would be to ship this car? Would you get it shipped or just drive it?

I ask this because i had a fellow tOOner (dale187) that lives in Delaware listed to the engine at idle. He said he could hear a faint tapping sound coming from the head. Im hoping its lifter tick, but he said it sounded like valve tap. However if it was valve tap it provably wouldent hold up the the 25psi test drive that dale took it on. Could this be first signs of the engine knocking from a spun bearing, or something of that nature?

Why would he take you on a boosted test drive if it were knockin?? The tapping from the head is most likely a dirty lifter or an exaust leak....but im leaning towards a lifter.
Depending on how much material was shaved from the bearings it may not have had enough time to destroy the rods/crank and you can most likely just get away with the swap. The more difficult part is to try to figure out why there were shavings.

I was thinking it was a knocking sound coming from the engine. He (dale187) hadn't thought of that. He said he could barely hear it. Like you said, it might not be a knock, maybe a lifter.

Yes, pinpointing the shavings would be key here, but there is no way i can get the dealer to drop the oil pan when they think it runs perfectly fine, let alone get another compression test. They said every time they comp. test its $92, i'm calling BS. But that's besides the point.

hey guys whats up. its a cheap deal. i know the previous owner of the car and i have taken a few rides in it and its fast but it needs a serious tune. the car was originally white and then painted red, that also needs to be cleaned up but the engine problem i dont know. if you have time for a project car like that u would say its a good deal. he just installed a new clutch and bc 272 cams. it has more in it than that 11.9 time on pump gas.

also it is a 6 bolt with a 2g head, stock trans and a 4 bolt rear form what he told me. i almost bought it but im in no need of another project car.

Looks like a pretty good deal Grant, you could always rent a trailer and trailer it home if you have access to a truck.

Saw you in the Eclipse over on front street on Wednesday night, it looked good. Bummer you are leaving the 2ga club though. What are you going to do with the 95?
