Factory Flashback presents: The EVOlution of your Lancer Part I
Back in the 70s, mitsubishi wanted to reach for the stars in the 1980s, they did this with the COLT and LANCER family of vehicles.. The Colt came in a version called the Lancer,

as well as a sportier version called the Galant. Galant FTO

and the Galant GTO

Not only were all of these cars related, but they shared the same family of engines. (More on that later)

This emphasis on shooting for the stars was not only manifested in multiple evolutions of the same platform, but was reflected in the code names of their experimental engine families. Their experiments with the Astron motor, would evolve into the Sirius motor(4GXX). The Astron, which was used in the Galant GTO, featured DOHC and "silent shaft technology" Although the Colt, Lancer, Galant GTO, and Galant FTO were 70's cars, I have included them in this thread because this motor is directly responsible for the 4G63 we all know and love; because the last of these cars, the 2000 GSR, used the first sirius 4G63. As a matter of fact, the first 4G series motors were sold in the US in the late 1970s, in the Lancer hatchback(known as the Celeste in japan), as the Plymoth Arrow, and Mitsubishi Colt

Well, in 1980 the Galant GTO EVOLVED into the Galant Lambda, (aka Dodge Challenger in the U.S.) using the new SOHC 2.0 litre turbocharged Sirius Dash 4G63 SOHC engine to power her RWD mitsubishi goodness

At the same time, Colt hatchbacks were still sold in the US in the 1980s, featuring SOHC 4G63 RWD goodness in the Colt GT and Fire Arrow GT US versions.

The Galant Lambda coupe was supplemented by a car called the Starion,

which would ultimately replace it, while the 4 door sport car duties continued to be administered by the Galant Sigma and the Colt Lancer GSR.

The History of your Lancer's EVOLUTION PART II

Meanwhile, mitsubishi began a switch to FWD, transverse motored performance cars, with a FWD Galant Sigma and Lambda, as well as a new, smaller car- the Cordia and Tredia, which came with a 4GX turbo AWD, introducing the world to transverse mounted 4G6X AWD 2 door hatchback and 4door sedan power..

Read more about the Cordia here

and here: http://www.turbocreations.com/cordiaturbo/awdcordia.html

The starion introduced a DOHC hemi head, designed by HKS, for Group B and Group A racing to the 4G63. This twin cam head would be introduced, in 1986 as a 1987 model, on a new car called the Gallant GSR/GSX/VR4, which replaced the Galant sigma.

The Galant would replace the Starion as Mitsubishi's factory racing platform for both rally and road racing, until 1989, when ralliart would use a different car for their road racing needs. The ultimate 4G63 Galant was the Galant Monte Carlo, a limited edition homolgation monster built to celebrate the rally car's victory at the Monte Carlo rally. After that, Mitsu realized the Galant was too heavy, and Mitsubishi cut a few inches off the Galant frame, and ditched the 2 rear doors and trunk, adding a hatchback and a sleeker nose. The result? The 1989 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSR and GSR-4

(GST and GSX for America. The eclipse and Galant woud be the 1-2 mitsu strategy from 1989~1993, until rules changes dictated a lighter, shorter wheelbase car. At the same time, there was a little car in Japan that was doing very well in the club racing ciruit. It featured a less beefy AWD transmission and transfer case, with the Sirius 4G motor, but displacing only 1.6 litres with DOHC and a turbo (we got this motor in the US in the Colt and mirage turbos). This car was called the Lancer GSR-4, and is the direct descendant of the Lancer EX1600 to EX2000 turbo cars.

Somone very, very smart at Mitsubishi had an idea... since the GSR-4 was already AWD, and the Sirius family motors and transmissions were all interchangable... why not put the Gallant VR-4/Eclipse engine into the 1.6 GSR?
At that point, the Gallant VR4 drivetrain was dropped into a light weight Lancer GSR-4(mirage 4door sirius 1.6 litre turbo AWD). The result?

I was always under the impression there was no jdm eclipse/dsm.......well, you learn something new everyday I guess

Technically not a jdm eclipse/dsm. All dsm's in japan were imported from America. They were just rebadged when they got there.

Glad you like it! I will follow up as follows:

I will post part III, which will cover EVO I~III and th 2G DSM tomorrow. I'll follow that up with a partIV, which will cover the EVO IV~VI.5, and the Airtrek. Part V will cover the EVOVII~IX, 3G eclipse, and new Galant VR4.

yay! that'll make a good read after coming home from work.

To go along with your history lesson, here is a picture of the 1st fuel injected turbocharged 4G63. While I visited the Mistubishi Motors Musuem here in Japan I got to see the very 1st production 4G63, It was carburated. Though the exposure to vehicles in the states that were powered by the 4G63 was always very limited, in Japan it is quite a different story. Here in Japan the 4G63 is avalaible in little K-cars, sport cars, mini-vans, suvs, to pickup trucks. The 4G63 is Japan's equivelant of the chevy small block.

Not too sure. It might be. I have heard a few different stories. Anyone know for sure?

Hey is there anywhere else that this writeup is posted? I'd like to put it on my club forum, but the Hangout requires a DSMTuners membership. :|

good history lesson but its flawed a little. the 71-73 dodge colts were actually 1st gen galants not lancers. over here in america anyway. it wasnt until 1974 when japan changed to the 2g body style that they changed the name to lancer. and the 4G series motor has been around since the mid to late 60s in one incarnation or another. i posted something similar to this with the same links last year but no one really noticed. its nice to know that others have the same interests.

Why are you in Japan? And where is the Mitsubishi Motors Museum?? Is it in that office park next to Shinagawa station?

Military, 10 years of the 15 I have in, have been spent in Tokyo. Yup, it is in one of the industrial office parks. When exiting the Shinagawa station DO NOT go out the side that says to Route 15, proceed to the exit on the opposite side. once you have exited the station, go to the right following the station, on your left hand side you will see Sterlings Hotel, then a 7-11, then the very next building is the Mistibishi Motors Corporation(MMC) corporate headquarters, right next to it is the MMC musuem, hours are 8：15～17：15 Mon-Sat.

anyway the fuel injected turbocharged 4G63, first debuted to the general public in the 82 lancer and later appeared in the 84' starion to compete in the rally circuit, here is a picture of said rally car. This info I got from the musuem so if you wish to contest it contact MMC here in Japan.
