Terrible gas mileage, pocketlogger, NOT BOOSTING

Hey everyone been lookin at all the horrid mileage posts never saw any with some logger info.. so here goes

I average about 19 highway and about 12 country road.

have pocketlogger. (dunno how to show the log on my computer so i'll give numbers)

Only hitting maybe 5psi boost this is my daily drive.


Coolant temp. 199
Timing never was higher than 38
airflow was never higher than 238hz
(averaged about 100ish)
injectors never made it past 10% d/c
air volume never made it past 3.
Throttle pos never higher than 30% (lowest position is 9% is that right??)
ISC at idle is 0 steps, 30% throttle its at 52 steps
Accel enrich jumps when you tap the throttle, 13%
Fuel trim HIGH 84%
Mid 100%
Low 81%
WideBand o2 reads between 14.0 and 15.5 the whole time. does fluxuate if you hit the throttle hard or let off abruptly
Regular o2 all over the place. spikes @ 0.80 and drops to 0 frequently
o2 trim hovers around 90's but hits 125% at most

I'm ###### missing something..

But no fuel leaks, checked o rings on injectors. pulls 18lbs vac at idle. no boost leaks no exhaust leaks.. walbro 255 @ 37psi Ecu tuned for 18 lb boost. dsmchip 10.5:1 openloop a/f

rest of the mods are on my profile, i know a 4banger can get better mpg than this, i'm not expecting to get 40's or to get even decent mileage boosting hard all the time..

Is there something else i need to look for thats off? i dont even know where to go from here. New wheel bearings too.
I would think its just a bad tune and running rich but my aem wideband says its perrrrfect on cruise...

Any help would be amazing!
 
Thats what ppl keep sayin but my throttle position never goes higher than 30..... and only hitting 5 psi boost maxx. i think something's off somewhere..
 
yeah somethings up,even if u did have a heavy foo it would be boosting more than that unless ## boost controller turned down which i doubt it is.
 
Buschur afpr. at 37 psi, supposed to be what my ecu needs..

Think i have a leak on the manifold? that'd cause that poor of mileage? i dont see any black exhaust marks anywhere tho.. think i should just get a set of gaskets and take the mani off to look for cracks underneath? hmmmm

I'd still like more info, a datalog would be great, but that is the only singular problem I can see causing the whole situation. Unless there are multiple simultaneous issues, this is the only logical problem IMO.

Something is making your O2 sensors read lean and your fuel trims also reflect it. And a usually creep happy turbo (E316G) is unwilling to provide more than 5psi of boost. Even if you had a sensor problem that mismatched the actual airflow into the engine, the turbo should spool nicely under a genuine lean condition. Is there any play in the turbo shaft? If the turbo is shot that could explain the lack of boost, but still leaves the lean AFRs on both NBO2 and WBO2, and poor gas mileage. That would then point to a bad MAS, unmetered air entering between the MAS and compressor, improper tune or poor fuel pressure. Although in this case I'm sure we can eliminate the chip tune since Jeff obviously knows what he's doing.

I tend to believe that the simplest explanation of a new problem is usually the most accurate. Check for a smallish exhaust leak preturbo. Did you port the exhaust manifold yourself?

according to my aem wideband i'm running right aroud 14.7


BUT

My turbo Will spool to 25+ psi. my wastegate vacuum hose fell off and it maxxed out my gauge, she will boost, i was just sayin i dont hit more than 5 if i'm dailey driving it.

That was critcal info that was miscommunicated. I thought you meant that the turbo wouldn't provide more than 5psi of boost.

Did you reconnect the vacuum line to the WGA? Or did you leave an open vac line hanging off your engine somewhere so that your engine could pull in unmetered air under vacuum and run lean, and also hemmorage off metered air under boost and make you run rich?

Stop everything and go actually perform a boost leak test. Don't just tighten couplers and call it good.

i reconnected everything and did another boost leak test. no leaks. held 20psi great.

I have a cable that hooks to the ecu, and have the hotsync dock. but dont know the software to view logs.
(fixing that now)

no boost leaks, no vac leaks. no hissing no anything wierd. just horrid gas mpg

A full log would help more.

Cruise vac is about 3-7?. around 0 if its cold.

Have AEM wideband and hooked up on the bung by the t-case.

So are you sure the VPC in combination with the chip is set up right for the injectors you're using? Even if they're the same size, the latencies may be causing the problems here if you switched brands. What are your GCC settings at?
 
Looking at your fuel trims it's way rich most of the time, whatever you're using to measure airflow is not tuned correctly.

Have you also checked the basics? Like base timing, and cam timing?

The low and high trims are nearly maxed out for pulling fuel out, but the mid trim sits perfectly right at 100. The O2 sensors however are both reading lean, so the ECU should be adding fuel and not removing it. That's what gets me. What causes a lean closed loop to make the ECU want to run even leaner?

That i dont know for sure. i havent touched it. the car came with another chip in the center but i'm assuming the 550 one is in there. according to the printout from keydriver there is a 550 one in there.
MY VPC is set really rich, every dial but the 3rd is at 3 o'clock
The GCC is normal, normal, normal, 2:45 2:30

Those are where they were when i got it and havent kept them at a different setting.
if you lean it out you still see no effect untill you hit the throttle
Gcc is set for pressure and not rpm

No i have not checked cam/ ign timing, how would i go about that? i have a haynes and chilton.......

I will do another log next time i get it out. 6+" of snow plus street tires i wouldnt consider daily driving. :thumb:
 
Inside of your VPC box, find this chip I circled in red. What is the number on your sticker?

I believe your VPC knobs may also need some adjustment.

The first knob "Response" is the enrichment for throttle tip-in, richer as turned clockwise.
The second knob "Gain" is the amount the fuel curve is changed by the VPC's chip.
The third knob "Idle" is the idle/below 1300rpm enrichment.
The fourth knob "Op Out" is connected to your GCC and I believe it controls the "Gain" that the GCC can tune, or in other words how much the fuel is changed per each incremental adjustment of a GCC knob.

Since you're using the GCC in pressure mode I just wanted to point out that on the GCC, the value to the right of each rpm point is a measurement for boost pressure in kg/cm^2. One kg/cm^2 is equal to about 14psi.

my vpc dials are very handy in the morning. lately its been around 10 degrees so i turn the gain wayy lean otherwise she stalls in seconds...

oh not to bump but there is a rogue blue wire with a silicone male connector just dangling... and a blue wire that is just a pigtail in the center? not gonna put em together unless you say otherwise.....
 
The VPC chip probably says D138, which designates that particular chip is set up for a 1G turbo with stock injectors (don't know why there's no difference between MTX or ATX though since they use different injectors in 1Gs). If your ECU chip is set up for 550's, then you should be good to go with a decent base tune if you zero out all the VPC and GCC settings.

Can you trace what devices the two dangling wires are coming out of?
 
Ooo ok, i zero'd all the settings and she did good the whole way home.. i' coudla swore it said p. the hand writing is almost as bad as mine but hey whatever works mayne.
-what exactly is the gcc and vpc doing if it has no effect on my tune? or is it for making everything just perfect?

she pulled 10ish ''hg vac at cruise at 43 mph (stuck behind slow ppl in snow) but now she pulls 17 vac at idle.

I did find a verrrrry loose connection at #2 fuel injector, gotta get a pigtail and solder it in. weird it was perfect last weekend when i changed my fuel injector seals
