Alright my fellow Dsmer's, Here's one for you guys. My buddy has a 91 talon TSI auto, it is mostly stock, 110k orig miles. only things it has is a recirculated greddy blow off valve, wally 255 fuel pump, and a turbo timer.

Anyways, here is the problem, the car is very temperamental. The car will run, and drive like a dream, and hold boost like its nobody's business, but occasionally the check engine light will go on and off. We just took it for a test drive and it ran perfect while we beat on it a little bit, then the Cl light came on while we were just cruising, but once we got it up to around 4,000 rpm building boost (I remind you it was holding boost), the cl light would go off. occasionally the car will cut out under boost, when this does happen, it happens at around 3,000 to 3500 rpm, and at roughly around 7-8 psi. I was almost thinking it could be the diaphragm for the waste gate sticking or something. I was thinking that it could also be a vacuum line. But regardless that still does not make since on why the check engine light comes on, I don't know if this would have anything to do with the map sensor? is there anyway to check and maybe pull the code? I am just a little stumped on this, also the car will idle weird, almost like it has a large surge, while it is in park or neutral. it does this occasionally as well.

I tried being as descriptive as I could, but I can try and better explain if anyone has more questions.

You can use an analog multimeter to pull codes from the 1g. You can also use a digital multimeter, but that's a lot easier if you have someone watching the display for you. The numbers jump very quickly with the digital, hence why I would recommend the analog.
 
couldnt you take it up to any parts store and they pull it for you?

i had a 2g dsm give me this problem, it turned out to be the wiring slipping out of the terminal in boost when the motor was flexing a little. it would disconnect and reconnect really quick and act almost like a big boost leak.
 
It's obd1 so unless there is a adaptor to plug in u need a analog multimeter because u need to count the sweeps of the needle when attached to the 2 pins on the port under dash. It either long slow sweeps or fast and short sweeps, count how many they u can find code.check ## batt terminals make sure they r tight.

There was no industry standard for OBD1 so there are many different connectors and data outputs between manufacturers. Therefore no store or shop will likely be able to help.

Every 1g DSM owner needs to learn to pull the codes themselves. It's like a rite of passage.
