temperature sending sensor question

Does the temperature sending sensor have anything to do with radiator fan speeds or is it solely for the instrument cluster gauge?

My fans are screwy. I replaced one a few months ago and it stayed on all the time. I was just rewiring my ect sensor and now it seems to work properly but my sending sensor keeps crapping out. I just wanna make sure it won't affect my fans until I can replace it.

From what i understand you should be fine i drove around for a few months with no sensor just left my air blowing so one fan would work and it didnt over heat.
