I just bought this TDO5H BEP turbine housing. I have a couple of pictures at the bottom of the same spot, one from far, and one from up close. I have heard that the old style BEP turbine housings had a a thin area in the casting of the turbine housing. I was just wondering what you guys thought about the cracks in the red circled area? I want to use this on my evo3 16g, but I do not want to have a piece of casting crack off and kill my turbo.. All opinions are appreciated. By the way, please disregard the tiny shreds of metal in the turbine housing volute, I was drilling out broken turbo bolts in the turbine housing...

Hi,

All turbine housing will crack over time, some worse then others. Cracks on the tongue like this are espically dangerous because when they crack enough they will break and almost always ruin your turbine wheel. You might ok, but I would not chance it.

Thanks for your honest opinion, its appreciated. And I totally agree, it is not worth the risk..

You could take a welder to it and then grind/machine it smooth.

That is a great idea, but I do not have the time to wait for all that to happen... I will be putting the evo3 16g in with the stock 7cm turbine housing. It will be plenty, but I obviously wanted a bit more of a kick because I wanted to use this turbine housing.. I might hold on to the BEP housing until I think of a solution, and then swap it in. Thanks for the help.

to be honest it looks like slag, what was the housing from? looks like something got very hot and let loose. maybe its just the pic but if you look closley its all thew the exhaust exit as well.

It came off a 16g with a tdo5h turbine wheel. The rest is just casting, the picture adds more of an exaggerated look to it. The only thing that is keeping this thing off my 16g is the cracks I have circled... Does anybody know if I remove the material around the crack and above it until it was just thick casting, will the flow dynamics of the turbine housing change? I'm thinking of removing the thin part to the right of the crack in the picture if it will not affect the flow..

Hi,

I would not remove or grind/cut any part of the tonque section of the turbine housing. Modifying this part of your turbine housing can effect the turbine housing performance. I do not know for sure what kind of hit you will see on turbine efficiency or flow but I suspect that it would be sizeable. These flow dynamics can also change the way the turbine wheel blades vibrate and can lead to a possible turbine wheel blade off in the future, defeating the purpose of modifying the turbine housing as the wheel will be trashed. A blade off can also be a serious health/engine bay hazard even though every tubine housing is suppose to be qualified in "burst and containment" testing.

Thanks for the help Bill. I do not think I will be using it at all as it seems like an expensive risk. Thanks for all the help and input.

Hey buddy...... I had this exact problem with mine.... My housing was much worse though. I took a dremel to it, and cut it out. I noticed no difference in spool or boost. It worked for me to cut it

I'd run it.

I've seen much worse erosion on BEP housings....and the result of running it that way:

This housing had less than 5k on it, and Bullseye warrantied my customer's housing and also rebuilt the turbo replacing the turbine wheel at a greatly discounted price.
