Talon starts, sputters, dies.

Ok, so I just bought a 93 Talon ES, and I bought it knowing it would not start. I have owned other 1g talons/eclipses before as race cars, and my brother's daily driver is a 93 Talon. His car is auto and mine is manual.

So anyway, the person I bought it from had been told by a mechanic the reason it would not start was a bad Coil pack or the power tr unit. It had been sitting for 2 years. So I took the car home and started playing the part swap game because my brother's DD runs fine. My car would turn over fine but had no spark. We determined that my coil pack and power tr are both fine. The car gets fuel, so we decided to try the computer. Determined my computer was bad, so I thought that would be an easy fix. I put his computer in my car, and it will sort of start, but it sputters and dies. I can't rev it up or anything, it just sputters and dies. We checked the timing marks, and they're lined up. I have no idea what else the problem could be.

Sitting for two years - change the fuel filter and flush out the gas since it's all full of varnish now.

Do the changes and see what happens.

Next thing I would check is the MAF, and I would deff add some fresh gas.

Definately change out the fuel filter and get rid of the old gas. After that get some sort of fuel system cleaner. I just use racing fuel octane 116 or 114 and ran it that way to clean up mine. That or marvel mystery oil.

Yea I argued with my brother about the fuel but he gave me the whole "I'm going to school for automotive it should run with old gas".

I did swap the MAF from his car and it made no difference.

My next step I guess will be to find the drain plug, drain the tank, and put some new gas in, then I'll change the filter. If the filter is all plugged will that make it not want to run at all?

If im not mistaken, im pretty sure there is no drain plug on a fuel tank. Your gonna have to either syphon the gas out or drop the tank. As far as the filter being plugged,yes that would cause the car not to run since theres no flow or not enough.

Alright, I'll have to get that filter changed.

I'll probably put some race fuel in there as well once it's changed.

The manual I have for the car shows that there is a drain plug on the fuel tank, but if not i'll just drop it to drain it. I'll keep you guys posted when I mess with it again.

Or undo the,fuel line and jump power to it and pump it all out into a can.

Alright, so I changed the fuel filter, spark plugs, and plug wires, and it didn't make a difference. The car is running like it's way out of time, but the marks are lined up. It'll only run about 5 seconds and it pops, backfires, and misses. :/

Alright, so I ended up trying a different CAS, and it fired right up and runs. So it ended up being a bad computer, and bad CAS. Now, however, it's surging whenever idling and isn't really running as well as it could. Before I changed the CAS I did a compression check which came out to 180-175-185-185. So now I suppose I'll look for vacuum leaks and see if that fixes my idle surge
