Talon stalls when closing hood.

I have a 1990 Eagle Talon with the 4G63 non-turbo. The other day i had the car running with the hood open and it stalled when i closed it and I don't know why. I am new to these cars. Another thing is the car seems to run really rough once it drops below 1000 rpm. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Your spark plug wires probably shorted out on the hood. It's a sign that you need new wires.

Did you check your battery terminals, and/or tie-down posts for touching the hood and shorting out?

Definately check hood clearance with all of the electrical components in the engine bay. I've heard a few stories and seen some pics of electrical fires. ouch.

i use to have a 92 n/a talon. had the same problem. my power wire for my sub amp was touching the hood

I know i have to replace my plugs and wires anyway so ill try that. i never thought about the amp wire tho or the battery tie down. Ill look into those. Could the car idling rough below 1000rpm have anything to do with all this?

Should be easy to tell, look for a burn mark under your hood anywhere it might have touched.

I just looked at my hood and i do have some burn marks. Could that cause a rough idle below 1000rpm?

Ya, soaking up some of the juice by sending it straight to ground which is making the alternator work horribly hard causing rotational resistence on the crank pulley... and slowing down the motor...

So it solved the issue with the car stalling when i closed the hood but not the rough idle.I am going to replace the plugs and wires but in the meantime is there any other ideas that could cause that. Where is the ICS anyway? Ive looked but i cant find it.

If you're having rough idle issues I'd start with the plugs and wires anyways. Since you know they're in need of replacement you should just start there.

Remember, start with the easiest and simplest things to check and work your way to the more complex and difficult things, it'll save you a LOT of time and money down the road.

If it runs really rough under 1K, then it could be a vacuum leak or fouled plugs.

Well i already checked for a vacuum leak and its all good but im gunna replace my plugs and wires and ###### check the timing too. i know the timing belt was replaced before i bought the car but i dont know if they even set up the timing. Its not the best on gas either so thats another thing.

Does it matter what plugs are used because i know in my old prelude if you didnt used factory OEM plugs the car would run like crap.

I would stick with EOM plugs and wires they are not much more expensive and are designed to work with your particular engine. I had a similar issue with rough idle around 800 RPM's one of my wires was burnt inside the boot when I took it off the electrode stayed on the plug and the end of the wire was completely fried.

Thanks thats good to know. I think my EGR valve had alot to do with it too. It was almost completely plugged with carbon. I did a quick cleaning and the car seems to be running alot better. Im still gunna replece my plugs and wires too.

Well i replaced my plugs and wires and cleaned the egr valve along with the rest of the engine with a intake cleaner and its still doing it. The only thing i have found to help it is to turn the idle up.
