I have an SAFC, I did some research on backing out the screw to make it flush in the MAF and also taking out the lower honeycombs to get get more air in. My question is, since I am able to tune for the more air, is it really worth my time since I don't plan on getting a GM MAF?

taking out the honeycomb is a bad idea. I did it and my car ran like crap till I put it back in. I would highly suggest you not taking that out. Also your safc is not really going to do you any good untill you get injectors and feul pump
