Hello, I am new to dsmtuners and love this site's users and info. My garrett big T28 just blew yesterday, 4+ years on 16 psi. :beatentodeath:
My goal is 350-450hp what would be the best replacement for under $1,000???
I was thinking turbonetics tn series but would love some input:confused:

Seriously, I've witnessed a brand new Turbonetics 60-1 take a shit within 150 miles. What a complete waste of money.
 
20g for sure. I love it in my '97 AWD and looks very stock with the stock heat sheilds in place. I am using a TD06 compressor cover, billet compressor wheel, and TD06SL2 turbine on my 2.4L engine. You don't need all that though, a TD05H based 20g is an awesome setup for a 2.0L.
I need bigger injectors bad; my FIC 650's hit 92% duty cycle @ logged 12psi and 75% throttle! Sucks having to hold back my foot from the pedal but I can't afford 850's right now becasuse I'm paying for a new paint job.

If you can't get a fresh 20g, just get any cheap MHI td05 based turbo and have Justin or Austin machine/rebuild it with the bigger wheels and HD thrust bearing. It's typically just a few days turnaround time and you will be well under $1000 and have the perfect turbo for your goals.

In all seriousness, a 20g will get you there and there are a sh*t ton of them for sale on this site.
 
Check out the classifieds, there are always a couple showing up. But I also agree on the 20g. After owning a 16g and 20g (owned the 16g first), I would not waste the money on the 16g, I would just go with the 20g.
 
But guys doesn't the 20g cost more than 1k or around that? And if not where can I find one?

Even if you can't find a fresh 20g just get any MHI TD05H (14b-16g) based turbo needing a rebuild and send it to Justin or austin. They can get high-quality wheels for a good price, machine what needs machining, and put it back together with a HD thrust bearing rebuild. I would recommend the 34mm wastegate while you're at it. Now you have a new turbo ready to rock-n-roll.

and as far as 16g i might as well rebuild my t28 right? WTF
what kind of exhaust housing should be used?

Please correct me if I'm wrong Justin but I don't believe it would be a whole lot more cost for you to build a Green vs a TD06H 20g from an MHI core. The compressor wheel might be a little bit more and the compressor housing would need some machining but I would think that is about the only real difference in price. Am I missing something here?
 
IF you're lucky enough to score a 20G that already has a TD06H turbine, which is damn near impossible, you'd spend about $100 on a Garrett T04E50 compressor plus another $100 or more in machinework to get it to fit the Mitsu turbine. Add to that the cost to machine the center housing, the cost to machine the compressor cover, and a rebalance.

It's not as easy as you think or there would be more of them out there.
 
I love my 20g. As stated before, its a nearly direct bolt on for a 2g, after you convert to MHI flanges. Uses stock oil and coolant feeds. Hits like a e316g, but will flow higher into the rpm band. It is a great street/strip turbo. Spools fast enough (3k-3.5k) and flows well around 19 PSI all the way to 6.5k. I put down my dyno numbers with my current mod list on 22 lbs.

16g needing a rebuild - $150-$250
TD06H anti-surge compressor housing - $130
TD06H or TD06SL2 turbine - $169
Rebuild Kit - $80
TD04E50 compressor wheel - $100
Machining - 150
Balance and assembly - $100

Total - $879-$979
Allow $150 extra for something I missed or a price that's way off and you are still around the $1k mark for a Green.

Again, please correct me if I'm way off here but if he was considering having a TD06 based 20g built, it seems that it would only be around $250 more for a green. Now a TD05H 20g would be a different story of course.

Edit: Here's a B16g I just spotted for $250 in the classifieds. Looks like a perfect candidate for a build:

Another idea, just to get it running and leave room for upgrade down the road is a 14b with a stock 1g exhaust manifold and oil lines. That offers similar performance to the T-28 and allows you to use any other MHI style turbo down the road. A 14b can be had, used, for less then $100 and a 1g exhaust manifold can be found for about the same. I'm sure you can find oil feed and return lines for a couple bucks a piece.

The 14b offers a lot of potential, with the right mods and tuning. It is reliable, spools quick, and I know I've seen people break into the 12's and 300 whp with them.

....and that's still an old-school non-HTA Green. The extra $300 would buy you a 100% new turbo that is already assembled with a billet compressor wheel capable of around 5lb/min additional peak airflow. $300 for 50hp is pretty cheap considering what some non-turbo guys spend to make 10% of that.

Hell if you're doing all this, you might as well buy a Kinugawa TD06H/60-1 CHRA for $450 and build your own non-HTA FP Red for half the money.

Took off intake then seen oil tracks.... Much reading and learning more, Solved issue. gotta love check valves and catch cans:hellyeah:
