I have a problem with my sunroof it wont open but when i press the button the little arms i guess you could call them just move back and forth like they are trying to open it but it wont open. But also sometimes when i press the button to open it, it doesnt do anything. any suggestions?

Mine does the same thing. On my car, I push the button and 'assist' the sunroof with my hand by pulling it open. This works everytime.

Also, If im driving highway speeds, my sunroof will not close. I have to wait until I'm driving slower before the sunroof will shut.

Try cleaning the rails with WD40.

Good Luck

I tried closing my sunroof at about 80 mph once and something about the air pressure forced one side of the sunroof off the track. It would then act like you described. I used some WD-40 to clean the track and then had to "guide" it back on the track. Try to see if both sides of the sunroof are still in the tracks. Use the manual crank to move the sun roof back and forth to see where the problem lies. The manual crank should be in the truck with your jack... near the spare tire.

Holy crap, I've been fighting my sunroof for years, and I never knew there was a manual crank  Good to know....

bunkaking16: I'm in the Springs and have had my sunroof in and out more times than I care to remember. I'f you need some advice, PM me.

What's this "manual crank" look like? And how do you crank the sunroof back with it? I'm pretty sure I don't have one of these in the back of my car.

it's an allen wrench type thing...that is shaped with 2 90 degree bends in it.

...| LOL kinda like that. (without the dots)

LOL. you pop the little tab off that's behind the button...cram it in there and happy cranking'

wow, I do have it, just didn't know what it was for, since I've never seen an allen headed bolt on my car, until today, haha. Never thought of popping off that little panel behind the switch. Thanks for the help guys.

It takes like 5 minutes to take the glass out(3bolts on either side) so you can get a look around in there and see whats going on. I just had to take mine all apart to fix it and it was alot easier than I thought.

My sunroof was completely locked up too (about 4 inches from closing, with the drivers side crooked about 1" behind where the pass. side had stopped). Yesterday I actually removed the entire assembly as per Defiant's now famous Sunroof PDF. When i finally tore it apart it seemed that the passenger slider had completely frozen up, while the driver's side slider moves freely up and down the guide. I couldn't figure out for the life of me what could be jamming the passenger side up so bad that I couldn't break it free, even after spraying it with WD-40. Finally, I decided to screw the guides back down to the assembly. When I started to screw the drivers side back down, i pressed the switch and somehow the pass. side started working.

Is it possible that dirt/debris could jam a slider up so bad that I wouldn't be able to break it free by hand?

I'm now thinking that the actual cause of the jam to begin with was that the slider was jamming on something (dirt/debris/???) and then that through off the sliders placement on the guides.

Do a Sunroof search for the dozens of times I've posted the link to the repair and maintenance pages.

Defiant... What is the proper method of installing the drive cables so that both sliders are at equal positions on the track (keep in mind that my sliders were not in the correct location prior to removal of these cables)? I know it gives a brief description of how to do this, but the 2 drive cables are of different lengths. Also, does anyone know for a fact which side the longer cable goes to (i removed them assuming they were the same length)?

Thanks!

^^^ Well, I answered my own question. I ended up googling how to install drive cables and found a slightly more detailed how to for a Saturn sunroof. I'm planning on writing up a tech article on how to remove/repair a 2g sunroof, but for all those that are still using the search button regarding Drive Cable Installation:

To Install Drive Cables:
1. Make sure that the motor is removed from the sunroof assembly.
2. Insert Drive Cables into the cable guide tubes with only the slider connection ends exposed. The shorter drive cable MUST be installed on the Pass. side, longer on the driver side.
3. With both sliders completely in the closed position, connect drive cables to the sliders.
4. Push both sliders all the way into the open position with cables still connected.
5. Re-install the sunroof motor.
6. Double check that the Sunroof Control Module (the rectangle black box) is conncted firmly to the sunroof assembly and that the gear on it is touching the exposed driver's side Drive Cable (there is a small notch in the black drive cable cover to allow the cable to touch the Sunroof Control Module gear).
7. Re-Install sunroof glass.
8. Press and hold the Sunroof Open/Close switch in order to COMPLETELY close the sunroof. (This step re-traines the Module to learn how far "completely closed" and "completely open" is, and is extremely important if previously you were playing around with opening and closing the sunroof during the "what the hell is wrong with this thing" step.)
9. Put your headliner back together and have another cold one. :)
