I know there have been threads about this, but does anyone know of a company that would be willing to fabricate us a 2g sunroof plug. I have a 2g sunroof glass that I am willing to sacrifice for measurements and mock-up. If we get enough people together, I'm sure someone can find a company that is willing to do this.

The only company i knew that was making them was 386 customs, but the fell off the face of the planet back in october. Their website is down and no sites have them posting since then. I just checked yesterday about this.

^Why?

At one time there were about 25 people interested in getting these built, but no vendor came through with a product.

Ya I am also curious as to why these would be unnecessary on a 2g. How would a sunroof plug be held in. Would you use rivets or glue it in? That would be nice if a removable one could be made in case you want to put the sunroof back in, like when selling the car.

what would people be more interested in, a rivet in plug to replace the entire mechanism or a simple replacement for the factory glass to shave a few lbs.

in the case of the rivet-in plug what are the thoughts given to the fact that it will still like a non functional sunroof unless the owner was going to body work to compensate for that. If they were to do the body work, then why not just replace the section of the roof skin..

clearly CF is everyone's favorite, but most carbon fiber hoods are fiberglass cores with a layer of CF over them. just running a painted fiberglass plug would be just as light as a carbon fiber with fiberglass core with less cost. Or would people be willing to pay for the CF look... or even pure CF?

Thoughts?

I'm not interested in weight reduction really. I think some people would want an alternative to paying $300-$500 for a sunroof glass. Even the used ones are getting hard to locate. I just put a used one into my 2g yesterday and it is not sealing correctly due to its age. Honestly how hard would it be to make a piece of fiberglass with a weatherstrip and two rails with holes for the 6 t25 bolts to the movement arms. I do not claim to have any experience with fiberglassing, have never done it, but it just seems like it wouldn't be that complicated for an experienced company with a model to work off of.

I'm gonna have one made but I'm not going to use it on my 2g.

I think it would be best if the plug was made just alittle larger, trim it some of the plug n use black seal or something of that sort.

I think it would make more sense to make a fiberglass replacement for the stock glass for what most of you are asking about.

most people are not willing to make a small run of 25-30 parts because of the cost in labor required in mold making. granted this would be a simple mold, but most would not want to bother.

I would consider doing this mostly because i want to reduce the weight bolted to my roof. so if i were making the mold already i would be willing to make a few for other people, if there is interest in it. Gotta know though, are people looking to bolt this down and remove all the motors, and weight from the roof? or is this just a lighter replacement for the stock glass. either way works, but i dont wanna make a mold only to find out its the reverse.

DWR: if your serious about getting this done let me know. I have no intention of wasting my time with if you are gung-ho about doing this.

How about this, when it is done you wanna come to NYC and test fit it?

I wanna have it done like my 1g plug.

I am more than willing to pay someone to make me a direct fiberglass replacement for my sunroof. I will even send them the spare one i have for a template. I would like to still have full functionality of the sunroof, or at the very least, a "t-top" style removable panel that would weather seal.

I fully agree i love my sunroof but when it leaks i wanna grab a tube of window weld an forget about it. If we could get a fiberglass replacement with a good weather strip or make one that works like a 1g that you snap into place that would be sweet.

on my own car i would prefer some sort of pop-up/pop-out setup. I have seen similar things on the DIY sunroof kits. I dont know what the setup is with the firstgen's i dont own one. but i know I would much prefer the ability to vent, then remove the sun roof vs all the weight of the motors and tracks.

I'm liking the idea of a piece to replace the glass with and have a lighter sunroof assembly while still retaining the functionality of it. I also like the idea of a plug that is like a t-top. Something that you could remove and put in the trunk for the extra ventillation in the summer would be nice. It would also decrease the amount of sunlight going into the car that glass normally allows keeping the car cooler.

There has to be some talented fabricators reading this. I know our stock glass sunroofs have a tendency to rust around the weatherstrip. Mine is just starting to where the weatherstrips meet together...A direct replacement sunroof made of fiberglass or carbon fiber would be great.

I'd like to see one made that replaces the entire sunroof assembly, not just the glass. Unbolt the 30-odd pounds from the tippy top of the car and replace it with a 5# carbon piece, seal it with some RTV and call it good.
