stubby shaft questions.

I have a oil pump from a previous bse cover. i have no idea how to take out the used stubby shaft so i screwed a bolt to the shaft end and knocked it out. Im not sure if this was the right way to do it but it did come out. so now the question is can i reuse the stubby shaft??? it seems to have some normal wear out of the oil grove.
