Ok here's the deal. I'm running a PTE 5031bb. Because it's a BB turbo i have to run a restrictor that goes in between the oil feed lines and the turbo itself. It was leaking alittle oil right where the restrictor screws into the turbo so i went to give it another 1/4 to 1/2 turn to tighten it up alittle. Well wouldn't ya know it, it strips. Now the restrictor is fine. If it was the restricor i wouldn't be asking for help here. The threads inside the turbo have now stripped.

What would you guys recommend i do here. I don't see retapping as an option. If some shaving got in the bearing housing it would probably be toasted on the first run. JB Weld doesn't have a high enough temperature threshold that it would hold up right underneath the manifold. So this leaves me with the thought of welding the restrictor in place.

Can anyone see any bad side effects from this? Are there any other options that you can think of short of taking it off and shipping it to some one that is qualified to disassemble the center section and then re-tap it?

JB Weld has a temp rating of 500F, I would hope that a water/oil cooled CHRA would not get that hot (max oil temps should only reach 1/2 that value and water temps 1/3). The teflon thread sealant I used on my oil feed restrictor nipple did not burn off and it has a much lower temp rating.

I can tell you for sure if you'd like me to take my non-water cooled's CHRA temp to compare?

As for welding, I had the same question last week when trying to get my stock WG arm hole plugged. I got mine TIG'd and was fine. With MIG/Stick welding I'd be fearful of errant arcing inside the housing with the close metal-metal tolerances of the wheels and bearings.

I'm not a welder so don't know if those fears are real, but having had Murpy's Law catch up to me many times prior, am always fearful ;) :dsm:

It might not be the the CHRA is reaching those temps, but this is maybe 2" at best directly underneath the exhaust manifold. I know that an egt gauge reads the temp inside the runners but with temps of 1500 degrees f inside i have to think that it would break 500 on the outside as well. I sent an email to PTE explaining the problem but i've yet to hear back from them.

If you can take the turbo off turn it upside down, put grease on the tap to catch the particles and you should be ok to tap it.

Good call but fortunately the threads weren't very damaged just alittle rounded up top. PTE made the restrictor out of aluminum so it's designed to strip first. I got a new one and just cleaned everything out real good and it threaded in. Thanks for the tip though.
