strange RPM's

ok today i moved the car form the house garage to the garage in the backyard. i let it warm up in the driveway, then drove it down the yard to the garage. when i got there, i pushed in the clutch, and the RPM's stayed at about 3000. they didnt go down for a good 3-4 seconds. also, there was a strange smell in the cabin, but i think that may have been cause i had the heater on, and i havnt given a good chance to air out yet. so i pull it into the garage, pop the hood, and i hear a gurgling sound. it sounded like water running to the bottom of something. very strange...anyone know if any of this is connected to something?

I bought a beater 95 talon for the winter and that car does that too .. if I wait a while the rpms will begin to fall but it's annoying as hell. I can't figure out the problem.
