Yes, I'm aware there are 400 thousand threads about break in procedures, but I couldn't find one that matched my concerns exactly, and me being a poor white boy, with very limited tools/operating space, and a very limited schedule, I'd like to be as certain as possible.

Anyways, here are the problems I need addressed. I'll give you my knowledge on the procedure, and just fill me in on what I may be missing/forgetting.

My engine is bored .20 over with new pistons. Block and head both resurfaced and hot tanked. I have an oil pressure gauge and boost gauge.

1) How do I go about priming the engine before startup? (I know, stupid question)

2) I read an article attached to another thread stating to drive the car (or bike) hard to break it in. However, does that procedure apply to boosted cars as well?

3) Since these cars are boosted, should I run the first 500 miles hard WITHOUT boost?? Or is that a bad idea since boost will have to be introduced at some point regardless? I would assume no boost, since the main goal is to seal the rings...?

4) Lastly, do I have more or less to worry about since my cylinders were bored with new matching pistons. I would assume less, but you know what happens when you assume...

Thanks in advance for anyone willing to throw in some advice, I really appreciate it.

I would not boost hard for the first 500-1000 miles. I would make sure that you run it with low boost and make sure you dont over rev it but spend time in most of the rpm range. Your rings do need to seat without the extra pressure, or you can blow them out. that is my 2 cents

yea i would take it easy boosting on it. i would do little pulls, ease into the throttle until full throttle let off at 5200 rpm or so. do that here and there for the first 500 miles or so. keep it at low boost 9 psi. then change the oil after 500 miles also. GL :)

There's nothing special about priming these engines besides packing the oil pump with vaseline before assembly and hitting the key when it's time to. You don't need to pull the MPI fuse and crank for a minute, or anything like that. That's more harm than good.

Remember the only thing that 'breaks in' is the rings to the cylinder. All your bearings will ride on a film of oil and should never come in contact with the crank. You want good cylinder pressure to really push those rings down and out to better seal off the combustion process from the crankcase. AKA least amount blowby = better ring seal.

I just broke mine in. I boosted 17psi and after 11 miles I had 170psi across the board with kelford 272s. Drive the car up into the 5k rpm range and let it bring itself down a few times go home and change the oil. It wouldn't suprise me if its 175-180 now. Don't baby the car, the rings should set fairly quickly.

This is actually the link I was referring to. Would you suggest I remove the wastegate actuator and break it in "hard" with no boost?

Probably best advice so far.

Give her hell with boost. My first break in I was relatively nice at 8lbs on a s16g and the rings didn't seat. Had to redo it and giving her hell at 15psi and 80-90% throttle and they sat great. Just make sure to decel in gear. Even the service manual says to break it in in boost at 30-60mph and more than half throttle.
