I know this has been touched only a few times, but I figured I would share the sump that I made for my 1990 stock fuel tank.

I first made a cardboard mock up of the piece I wanted to make just to get some ideas of the angles and measurements.

I then took some 16 ga mild cold rolled steel that was laying around and started to bend it to the measurements of my mock up. It made sense because the stock fuel tank is 16/18 gauge mild steel with a rubber protective coating on it. Make sure before you cut into the tank or especially any welding. Let the fuel tank sit and vent for about 3 weeks with no fuel in it, also be sure to clean it exceptionally well with some brake clean or similar to aliphatic naptha.

Of course after I bent it all up to shape and used a mallet to finish some of the fine work, I welded it up and sanded the welds down to give it a cleaner look. I also welded some 6 an fittings onto the back of it spaced about 2.5" apart.

Here's the area where I cut the fuel tank and mocked up the sump before welding it all together.

Then the final product. Pressurized it to 25 psi to check for any leaks and held fine for a few hours before I allowed it to vent.
