I noticed that i had some smoke pouring out of my tailpipe. so i thought it was my turbo, I pulled off my licp and noticed that there was a puddle of oil in there(licp). I purchased a new 16g and installed it correctly, i alsso did clean out all my pipes before i installed everything back in.well neway i put the turbo in and im still smoking, and i still have some oil that is being blown threw my licp. so i did a compression test to see whats up, i got 150 across the board except for cylinder # 3 it checked out at 30 psi. i also just installed a cometic head gasket like 2 weeks before, but didnt deck the head or the block:shhh: is it possible that this could be the culprit? i also now that i have bad valve seals but that another story, i know that that would cause smoke, but why is there oil in my licp?thanks for the help!:dsm:

30 psi in one cylinder could be a leaking hg, broken rings, burnt piston, leaking valve, etc. Recheck the compression again and then try putting some oil in the cylinder and seeing if the compression comes up. Have you noticed the engine missing? With compression that low, you should notice more than a smoking issue.

As far as the oil in the ic pipe, did you drain and clean the intercooler along with the ic pipes?

youd think if it was a blown head gasket youd lose some exhaust from the head gasket (wherever it was broken). is there exhaust smoke coming from it?

Why didnt you resurface the head with the Cometic head gasket? Metal gaskets have a hard time overcoming the imperfections in a block or head compared to the stock composite ones.

I would start by doing a leak down test to determine where you are losing all that pressure. I wouldnt doubt one bit if it was head gasket related since you skipped a couple of steps in that process.

Did you check the compression before you replaced the HG? If so what were the numbers?

I did check compression right after i put on the cometic,I got 150 across the board, with a 6 bolt bottom end, so im pertty sure i had a healthy engine..HAD. I dont really have any misssfiring, and the tail pipe only smokes under load, at idle its very very slight. the thing that really has me stumpped is my licp, i dont understand why i have oil in there, i cleaned all of my pipes including fmic, and im still getting oil?

Well, do a leak down test and find out. A little oil in the lower pipe is normal over time but definitely not after a new turbo was just installed. Did you double check the turbo for any shaft play? It there anything wronf with the oil return from the turbo?

Do you have the hose hooked up from the valve cover to the intake pipe? HAve you checked/replace the pcv valve lately?

ok, well i took off the head this morning and i found a hole mess of coolant and oil in the cylinders and all over the gasket, so im guessing that the gasket must have leaked horribly and that was my smoking problem. but i dont understand why i got 30psi in cylinder #3 i just replaced the valves.at first i thought that maybe my timming slipped a couple of teeth but then wouldent another cyliner be the same since they work in pairs? im extremely confused!:dsm:

You might want to check your temperature sensors too. I dunno why or how but replacing my temperature sensor solved my smoking/oil problem. DSMs are crazy weird.

When you replace the HG with a Cometic HG and put the head studs back in with ARP or stock ones they may have loosened up a bit to allow for the low comp in cyl 3, so retigten them down, but that would probably cause low comp all across but still worth checking, and as for the smoke, the oil feedline to your turbo could be back and leaking oil into the turbo to cause some of the smoke when boosting...asuming thats what you are refering to when you say" and the tail pipe only smokes under load". Also Im not saying that the head studs are the culprit just that Ive talked with a few people and they used ARP studs and they loosened up a little bit and they had to retighten then once and they haven't loosened since.
