Ive been trying to find the laws if its legal to change my steering wheel and i cant. I've been told by my local Tuner shop that its illegal, but i personally hate how large the steering wheel is. Do any of you guys know the law in this area especially for PA? thanks guys

Yes but there are always loop-holes, make up some lie about why you have an aftermarket wheel in, hell someone broke into your car and stole it, the air bag deployed for no reason, whatever and then tell them to go f$*@ themselves. That's the way I look at it, stupid laws need to be shoved up someones ass.

So far as I've found, this is an unanswered question. It seems to be illegal for a shop to disable airbags, but I know of no statute which says the owner can't. As for selling a car with safety equipment disabled, this is also unknown in terms of a private owner/seller.

Speed shops are usually as adept at law interpretation as they are at dental work. Conversely, few lawyers can determine what size wheels will fit a given car.

Your insurance company might be able to refuse a claim if you get injured from removing your airbag without telling them about it. As long as they know you don't have airbags (for whatever reason you want to give them) you should be fine as far as they're concerned. As for the legal side - if they can't prove that you removed a working airbag intentionally then you have nothing to worry about. Check your state laws to be sure..

PA INSPECTION CODE
CHAPTER 175. VEHICLE EQUIPMENT AND INSPECTION
Subchapter E. PASSENGER CARS AND LIGHT TRUCKS
§ 175.63. Steering.

(b) Steering wheel. The steering wheel, except if specially designed for handicapped drivers, shall be equivalent to original equipment in material strength and have a minimum outside diameter of 13 inches.

still looking in the code for airbags..

I heard the law was you can remove/disable your airbags at your wish, but if you decide to sell the car, the car must have working airbags.

I live in Pa too and I'm right outside of Pittsburgh! :) I talked specifically to a shop about it before I put mine on [MOMO Trek]. The guy told me he had one on his Jetta for 5 years and never had any issues, inspection and being pulled over. The only thing he said that I had to worry about was what one of the previous posts mentioned, that if you were in an accident it would be a tough claim.
Then again you could always keep your OE wheel in the hatch with a steering wheel puller :shhh: :D , Need I go further? [defective airbags]
