I had my front subframe off to do some bushings and noticed that my old rack was a bit oily so I decided to replace it while I had everything apart. I bought a rebuilt rack and put the subframe and rack back up attached the lines, spline and tightened the pinch bolt. I immediately noticed that the steering was notchy as if it was getting stuck on something, this was with nothing else connected, the tie rods weren't even on the knuckles. I attributed this notchy feeling to the rack being dry and isntalled the rest of the front suspension, exhaust, t-case, ext.
I then properly bleed the system but still the notchy feeling persisted. It still felt this way while it was up on jack stands with the car on or off and also on the short drive I took it on. I then tried to further bleed the system in hopes that there was still some air trapped somewhere but to no avail as it has not gotten any better and the fluid level has not dropped.
What could my problem be? Could there be air still trapped in the system? Did I maybe over tighten something??? Or did I just get a POS rebuilt rack? I'm worried that this extra stress is going to kill my pump now too, so much for preventative maintenance, the old one may have had a very slow leak but at least it was smooth.
