Hey so I have recently replaced my starter in my 92 talon tsi awd, and upon putting the battery back in and connecting the negative and positive the alarm goes off (typical) and the starter starts trying to work. It wont actually start the car but its cranking when the negative terminal is connected to the battery. We took extra time in making sure everything was connected properly, so not sure if the wires are touching and creating a complete circut or what. Any info or suggestions would be appreciated on what could be causing this.
Thanks in advance guys :thumb:

Oh i plan to take this POS out dont worry LOL but would that have any affect on the starter cranking and failing when the battery is connected?

I recently had a problem with my starter. It wasnt doing what yours is doing but I would suggest pulling the start off and checking the wires. Make sure the wires are separated and also trace the wires back to the batter and make sure the positive wire isnt exposed and may be touching something metal. Hope this helps

battery voltage is always present at the large lug on the starter seliniod , somehow, you have bypassed the seliniod and wired directly to the starter, so you have a crossed wire at the starter seliniod

Ok so I found some time today and fixed the problem where the starter was spinning upon battery connection. It was the power wires touching the harness, so I cut the hose surrounding it, seperated them and wrapped some electrical tape around them.
Now the problem is when i crank the car, the starter spins but doesnt engage, just a whining sound. So any insight on this would be awesome.

If the starter is spinning but not catching the flywheel then either the starter is bad and the teeth aren't "going out" like they should, or you have the wrong starter or flywheel on your car. There are different flywheels and starters for the FWD/AWD. Make sure your have the correct one for your setup.

Well how might one distinguish between the two?
And there was a black tube kinda thing that wasnt on my other starter so its not connected to anything. But ive been told that wouldnt effect it.

the AWD flywheels are 270 mm in diameter and the FWD flywheel is 280mm but it doesnt matter because the bellhousing dictates where the starter gear contacts the flywheel, so you dont have to worry about that
there are 3 things to understand about the starter

the seliniod
is a heavy duty relay that connects battery voltage to the starter when the key is in start position

the starter bendix
Its the mechanical part of the starter that moves out to engage the ring gear and spin the engine

the starter motor itself
Its just a motor that spins when you connect battery voltage across the seliniod

you have a problem with the bendix, take the starter back to where you got it

Well im shit outta luck then, old one was going bad, whe i bought the car it came with what i thought was a good starter. Looks like ill have to source one out.

Make sure you have your trigger wire hooked up on your starter. also check your wiring to your battery if it takes off without you trying to start it.

Hey! The old one was weak, if the second one is incorrect, why not just get the old "weak" one rebuilt?

check solinoid if it moves the bendix out to engaged to ring gear.damage bendix if it rotate freely like a damage bike sprocket.compare the number and diameter of gear to old one.hope this may help.
