starter question

I have a 91 eagle talon tsi awd 5 speed.

I have a automatic starter from a 1g, that is 1/4" short of actually engaging on the flywheel.

I went to buy a 2g awd manual starter (the owner wasn't sure) and I brought my starter with to compare. The starters were exactly the same WTF?

Are the automatic awd and manual awd the same? Are 2g starters the same as 1g? Are AWD and FWD manual starters the same?

I've tried searching folks and it seems that every joe has his own opinion, everybody has contradicting statements.

Here's your answer.

YES they are different.

PN for a 2g 5 speed starter is MD172860.

PN for a 2g auto starter is MD172861.

The auto starters do not protrude as far as the 5 speed starters.

If you try to use an auto starter on a 5 speed, IT WILL NOT START

So any starter will work as long as it is off a 5 speed (1g or 2g, AWD OR FWD)?

looks like the 2g starter (manual) and 1g starter (manual) have different part numbers, so all my questions have been answered in less than 15 minutes. thank you guys.

From what I see it looks like

1g 5 speed starter fit both fwd and awd

1g automatic is different than 1g 5 speed starter

2g 5 speed starter is the same for both fwd and awd

2g automatic is different than 2g 5 speed starter

2g 5 speed starter and 1g 5 speed starter are different

Sorry, I was copying and pasting and it wasn't working right so sorry if it was hard to follow me. But basically from my understanding what you need to know is this. M/T and autos use different starters because of the length of the nose. As long as you have one for a M/T car you should be good to go. The only problem arises when you try to put a six bolt awd flywheel in a M/T fwd car.
The awd six bolt flywheel has a slightly smaller outer diameter. This means that the positioning of the bell housing has the starter too far to the outside, and the starter teeth will not engage the outer ring gear of the too small awd six bolt flywheel. But since you are awd you don't have to worry about that.
