starter issues please help!!!

i have a 95 awd with a 6 bolt motor in it i had the motor on a fwd before i went awd i swapped the trans and i didnt swap the starter plate so i pulled the trans the other day and put a 6bolt starter plate on and the starter seems to not catch or if it does it makes a clanking sound but the car wont start so i took the starter out and replaced it and the same issue does any one know what it can be or what else can i try

Your post is very confusing... specifically:

Do you mean you swapped in an engine from a GST?

Most likely you have the wrong flywheel on, and it is not making contact with the starter. AWD tranny requires the AWD flywheel.

i had the motor in a fwd car and then i pulled the motor and put it in a awd car and i didnt swap the starter plate on the motor but i have been having grinding issues but i fixed the issue i drop the trans and changed the plate,flywheel and starter and the issue is fixed
