Starter engaging while driving

Hey guys, car is 1990 talon awd turbo.

Here's the problem, When im driving down the road, the starter will kick out and cause the car to buck pretty hard and you can hear it spinning. When you push the clutch in, the problem stops, and no more sounds. So everytime this happens which is literally about every 200ft, I have to pull over on the side of the road, get out and hit the starter with something, and drive off only to have it happen again right away.

Starter itself, or could it be more deep than that? Thanks for any help.

Pull the starter out and bench test it. Check from proper extension from the bendix.

I dont think that would be the issue. It starts the car fine. It just engages while driving.

I would think ignition switch problem or wiring

IF the bendix isn't kicking the gear back in than it could be dragging on the flywheel. When you hit the starter it knocks it back in. If you feel that it is something else than do some testing. Start the car than unplug the trigger wire on the starter. That will tell you right away.
