Looking at the options on SBR's website for their Stage 1 stroker kit I noticed that you can specify standard bore Wiseco pistons. Everyone always says .020 overbore, but I'm thinking I can save some money on machine shop costs by going standard bore. Input? Opinions?

You might save money in the begining, but not all that much. Certianly not enough to justifiy taking away the peace of mind of knowing you properly rebuilt the engine. You do understand that not doing the machining there could quite probably leave you with less compression compared to if you did the work because the rings dont have a perfectly smooth surface to seal against.

Would you rebuild a motor without replacing the bearings? Then why rebuild a motor without doing the proper machine work?

Thanks for the input, I also asked the folks at slowboyracing the same thing and this is the response I got. This should be helpful in case someone else has the same question in the future.

Providing your bores are 100%, you can get away with using a bottle hone to take the “glaze” off the cylinder walls and use stock bore pistons. Bottle hones are generally 60-75.00 at Summit/ Jegs and work very well, just make sure you follow the directions. Do not get me wrong, it is always better to go .020” over because you can make sure the bore is 100% accurate for the piston you are using (piston to wall clearance) however we have done many of stock bore replacements using the bottle hone.

Also, keep in mind going to a 100 mm crank, the bottom of each bore will need clearanced for the rod swing. So, I am not so sure you will be able to do this without visiting the machine shop.

Please email back if you need better/ more information!
