Is the Sr a better engine overall and has anyone actually tried throwing one in a T/E/L before?

Why would anyone want to go through the effort of putting a SR20DET in a DSM?

The 4G63 is known to be one of the strongest 4cylinder blocks ever made. The SR20DET, while a nice motor, is aluminum. Id doubt a forged internaled SR20 could hold as much power as a completly stock short block Evo 4G63.

The only real advantage that the SR20 has is in its weight. The aluminum block is a bit lighter than the iron block is. If you were making a car for turning their might be an advantage, but not really that big of one.

From what i have heard they are pretty much equal based on stats. but i would say that for us the 4G63t is better because it comes stock on the DSMs and they have to be imported for the 240s. why spend the extra $$$ on an engine swap.

IMO, anyone who performs such a swap, would not be applauded for creativity, but be laughed at for ig'nance

you'd probably have to make it rwd as well, and if youre gonna do that, put a v8 in there.

A friend of mine has a SR20DET swapped in his 1992 Nissan NX2000... I gotta say it pulls like a MOFO and kills my stock GSX anytime. He's recorded a 13.2run... dunno what trap speed though.

SR20DET (light engine) + nx2000 (light car) = badass...
He dynoed it at 242 HP last month.

I dont know however what kind of turbo's in there...

Anyway, the car runs freakin quick, but is ugly as hell and is the most unreliable car i've ever seen.

Awhile back, Turbo Magazine turboed an older 91ish sentra se-r that came stock with the SR20de. They went over 20psi on it, still with all stock internals. It's a good motor, for a nissan. But for a DSM, the 4g63 is a better bet. You can run 30psi on a 4g63 with stock internals and some arp's at the track It will take it. Well, I'm sure sumthin will break along the way, but with racing, that's just the nature of the beast. Why you'd want to swap in an SR20det, I dunno, maybe to earn respect from Fast/Furious fans maybe cuz they don't know what a 4g63 is.

Nissan motors belong in nissans.

Mitsubishi motors belong in Mitsubishis

of course with a few exceptions. :D

In my eclipse, i'd have nothing else than a 4G63t.

Stock 4g63 can take wayyy more boost than a stock SR20, 4g63 is a better engine, however, the SR20 beats it in reliability. Ive worked on both, ive owned both.

13.2s or not fast.

in my experience in building and tuning both i would say the 4g63 is hands down a better engine. The SR uses push rods, yes push rods and uses an aluminum block which really doesn't cool all that well and the head ports aren't all that big. Its a known fact that the 4g63 head flows better than the SR20 and the 3SGTE and i would start looking into putting 4g63's into 240's over the SR :p

Most definately I would rather see a 4g in a 240 or a sentra. I love my se-r but the only advantage on a sr motor is weight thats why you only need 250 horse to make it seem fast but its not gonna handle alot of HP without alot of fuel mods. Hands down the 4g can handle alot of power before the fuel mods. Not sayin fuel mods are for losers but its just nature young kids + dsms = big turbos no fuel mods. j/k but its sorta true!. Apples to oranges I say.

my brother has a 1995 240sx with a sr20 swap. He basicly has everthing he needs for a upgraded turbo (intercoolor, all the electronics, 3' all the way back) and that thing friggin rips. its fast as shit, and i think it was well worth the money. As for reliability, he has yet to have any problems related to the motor. MHO, it was a good buy.

How about that guy that swapped a 4g63 into his porsche 911. I would like to think that says somthing. :dsm:

idk ive known some people who have very different veiws i believe u will get alot more out of the sr20det but me i am holding a 420a. With the sr20 ive seen alot more outpul espcially if u order the gtir sr20det. Its my current project on my eclipse it is said to cost about 10k for just fabrication and mounts and the engine. Also im converting my car to an AWD and b4 u all falme me about getting a GSX i absolutely have no desire to do so i want to take a low end car and make it high end

What?!? Not to flame but why? honestly? I think an sr20 in a dsm that is already equipped with a 4g63t is a waste of money and time the 4g63 has proven itself time and time again. With the money you would spend on a custom fabricated swap you could mod your exsiting engine and be better off IMO

... i want to take a low end car and make it high end

High end cars have high resale value. I wouldn't come near a SR20 swapped DSM with a 10' pole. The only way I'd take it is if it were free so I could part it out. I'd hate to deal with all the problems that car would have. Any time almost ANYTHING broke, it would be a custom affair. LOL And people say 4g63s are unreliable ROFL

I thought i just saw another sr20 swap in a dsm thread a while ago... Keep he 4g63T engine and don't think about an sr20 swap. The 4g63T is a beter well-designed turbocharged motor capable of wonders when built right and still surpising with just bolt-ons. I wouldn't even waste my time on thinking about such a swap.

I've read about the 4g63 heads flowing better than sr20s. Also, the aluminum block while lighter, i have read of some instances of cracking, etc. Turbo mag had a nice sr20 buildup that they were shooting for 600whp. they got to 520whp but then the block had an issue. There would be no need to swap one in a dsm

What is the basis of these 'very different views'? How much 'more' will you get out of the sr20 platform?

Further, concerning even the 420a equipped 2g cars, when does an sr20 swap outperform a 420a with forged internals and the difference in costs dumped into the enginebay?

Not to falme you.

People put SR20s into 240SX because the KA20 is a joke and the KA24 is too expensive to build. Unlike Nissan and Honda, DSMs come with a dream engine stock, why mess with it.
