Remove the speedometer cable from the transaxle (between the intake and firewall).

and if its the speedometer cable causing a problem what will happen? im guessing nothing. but what if it isnt the problem, then what will happen?

They may have just not hooked it back up . Have you looked ? It just screws in .

yeah i was trying to look for it but i couldn't really seem to find it. right next to my trans mount tho there were two holes, one of them looked dirty and black, the other looked as if at one time or another something was in fact screwed into it. other than that i couldn't see much but then again everything is installed and pretty much in the way  where would that wire be coming from if it was disconnected and i had to f ind it straggling around?

It is 90% what ROokie said. They probably forgot it or didn't put it in right.

The firewall . I am afraid you may have to get dirty . LOL . Get a flashlight and look around area where it attaches . Look behind and under the intake area .

Same thing happened to me, sort of, after I had my transmission rebuilt. It took about four or five thousand miles, but one day the speedo just quit working. I checked the connection point on the transmission (as pictured in a previous post) and it was loose, tightened it up without results. Then I removed the transmission connection and gave a little tug on the inner drive cable and what you know about six inches of it came out in my hand. Time to replace the speedo cable. About $22.00 from Advance Auto Parts, it comes complete including the thru-firewall rubber grommet. By the way, the transmission end is connected on the top of the transmission, sort of below the throttle body, and behind the shifter cable attach points, at least in that area. I didn't have to remove anything to get to the connection.

Sounds like the older cables (mine was 135k mile) can't take the stress of rough handling that might be involved in transmission/clutch work.

To replace the old cable you have to remove the gauge cluster to get to that end of the cable, pull out the old grommet in the firewall, unhook the cable from the transmission, and then snake out the old cable. Install is just the reverse, be careful not to over stress the new cable by bending it in a tight loop while installing. The toughest part is getting the old cable out of the dash clip thing. Don't forget to lube the cable before you install it, there should be grease included with the new cable.

ok so i finally got around to this mess. the cable is not on the tranny. and quickly looking around i couldn't find a hanging cable anywhere. where should i look on the firewall for where it comes thru?? please help asap thanks

One end goes directly to your cluster, the other to the tranny. Obviously it isn't in the tranny. There aren't that many things coming out of the firewall. If you don't know what the cable looks like, trace out all the "things" that come out of the firewall.

or, don't take it to a shop in the first place and do everything yourself.

It really sounds like you are pulling our leg. If you know where the tranny is, you should know where the speedo cable is. It is the only cable that runs from the firewall to the tranny. If the cable isn't in the tranny, it should be in the general area (unless they removed it from the car, which isn't easy). The cable has a white gear on the end. Feed the gear down into the tranny and bolt the bracket back onto the tranny (shown in picture above).

If I was in your position, I would take it back to the shop (or anyone that knows where the speedo cable should be) and just pull someone to the side and ask them to locate the cable.

Make the goddamned shop correct their work.

haha yes and i had tons of fun telling mitsubishi they f-ed up. :notgood: they don't listen. and i do do all the work on my car. i just hate putting in clutches and dealing with transmissions.

i'm gonna take a closer look today, ill find it, but just thought i'd ask to know where the general area it would be coming fromt he firewall so i could follow where its dangling at. also another thing i know is that the area where it connects onto the trans has no bracket it on it, looks like its open. i hope the bracket is on the cable....or will it be?? that could ruin my day....:notgood:
