Hey ya'll I've seen a similar post but couldn't really find an answer. Okay here's whats up. I bought a 97 420a 5speed knowing it needed a new speed sensor. I bought one but when trying to remove it, I couldn't get the freakin thing to come out. It's like the part that was in the tranny was stuck. Well the 2 parts finally separated but when they did, the bottom part fell into the tranny. I've tried everything to try and get the thing out. Even borrowed a optic cable to see if I could look down in there and see it. I was quoted at 400 just to drop the tranny. I'm no gearhead(I wish)so I can't do it myself. One of my dad's friends was saying since its plastic that if it was his, he'd just drive the thing. Well its my baby and I don't wanna do anymore damage and have to get a whole new tranny. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!

Well I'm deff not gonna drive it till its outta there but the thing is I can't even see where it fell.

The sensor is mounted on top of the transmission, held in by one bolt.
Once you have the sensor off, the gear will be in the hole that the sensor is covering.
If you search VSS you might be able to find a picture.
I've seen a diagram on here before, but I can't find it right now because I don't have enough time to search.

Yeah I found it and got the top part out but the lower half was stuck and when it did come lose it fell down in the tranny =(

Ok good so you found the sensor.
Now trying to get the "gear" out.... When I pulled mine out it took a thin pair of needle nose pliers and a lot of patience!!
It will feel like it is too big to go through the hole, but it isn't.
It has been a while since I did mine.
But I replaced both the sensor and the gear, because the gear got a little chewed up from puling it out.

Or you could always get GPS and use it for a speedo?...:sneaky:

I just searched for a faking hour and I can not find any pictures!!!
Does any one have pictures so he can see what the actual gear looks like?

i dont think that ther gear can fall down into the tranny.. it may look like it did, but its ###### just to the side. get a small light and a neelde nose pliers like everyone is sayin. the gear is only about and inch long and ###### a diameter between a nickel and a quarter.. hope ya havnt gave up on it!!!

LOL NeMiZiS I actually was half thinking of the GPS idea.
Yeah I've pretty much given up on it till I get the money to pay someone to drop and tear apart my tranny. But I'll take your advice and look again although I've spent so much time with a light and the kind of pliers you were talking about. Maybe my luck will change LOL. Here's hoping!

Fill the tranny with water and hope that it will float to the top. Then drain the tranny and put fresh oil.It will be fine.

Hey guys a quick update. The gear is indeed in there. My bro was looking for it and claimed to have found(saw)it, so I went out to look and yup there it was. So we rigged a coat hanger and tried using it to nudge the gear closer to the hole and it worked. Looking directly down, you can see the gear. Now if only we can figure a way to grab it. Pliers are too short so we might try one of those flexible things with the claw on the end. Thanks for the input guys! Oh and btw inthemidst, the gear does seem to be floating but not cause I filled the tranny with water LOL

What kind of pliers are you using? Just standard length needle nose pliers wont cut it. Go to a hardware store and get a pair of extra long needle nose. That should do it.

Well it turns out that what we thought was the gear must not be. I had a mechanic friend of mine look at it and he couldn't get it out and said it looked to him like it the spot where the gear we're looking for goes into. Quick question. Is the gear plastic or is there metal in there too?

Wow bro thanks a ton! =D I've been looking for a pic of the gear forever! Anywhere I can buy a new gear? I saw a link for one for a GSX but I do know they're different. The one for the GSX was like $12 if I remember right.

Does anyone have a link where I could buy just the gear and not the sensor? I found 2 sensors with the gear on ebay. Here's the item numbers: 120518047493, 220562384515
I really don't want to pay that much for the gear if I get get it separate but I'll do what I gotta do. Thanks for the advice guys!

The link you put up doesn't really show a picture of the gear it self.
But from what it says it should work just fine.

I'm thinking about ordering one for me, because I've had mine out for like a year.
I bought a new sensor a long time ago, but my gear was chewed up a little bit and never wanted to put it in my new neon tranny.

Okay cool man, thanks. If this gear turns out to be one for a 4g63, where else could I get just the gear?
