Ok so i had a flat tire so i put the donut on. i drove probably 30 miles total. when i got home, i smelled brake dust so i checked it out. the wheel was real hot. so i turned the garage light on and seen the shaft from the spindle where the big nut goes on was snapped off. this really sucks and i need help. does it sound like a wheel bearing?

Broken axles?

Bad wheel bearings make noise mine would hum, and would thud when turning in opposite direction (i.e. when turning right, left bearing would go crazy).

A picture would be helpful. It sounds like you have broken the drive shaft after the hud where the drive shaft nut attaches.

Here is a link of the front suspension on our cars, if you can not take a picture then this link will help describe where the problem occurred and maybe give you some clarification on what might have broken.

i will get pics today some time when someone gets home with a cell phone. now i know the wheel bearings bad bc when i went to get it aligned, they told me. and it always jumped around when i was driving it. ill try to describe this better. ok, the axle and cv joint are brand new (replaced it when i replaced crossmember). both front wheels are toe out after changing crossmembers. i was getting wheel bearing changed monday, then getting an alignment. everything was going great with the car just that i go through front tires every week and a half. (being toe out, tire wore mostly on outer part of tire). when i have the right front in the air, it wiggles which i assume is a bad wheel bearing. now since the alignment was f-ed up and putting the donut on, made things even worse. just looking at it, it was REALLY toe out and being a donut, alot smaller and less stagger. as for the hurming noise, it always did it. not very loud but it did. now on the way home last night, i heard it easily as it was loud.

ok i just got off the phone with Advance Auto Parts. they told me with the donut tire being on, thatd make the wheel bearing ride different. since it was bad, it generated heat heat to everything (including my brake pads and rotor which explains the brake smell) and snapping the spindle shaft.

Don't bump your post.

The only thing you can do right now is to take the wheel off, inspect the brake system, check the CV axle for other damage, etc. If you don't feel confident, take it to a shop or dealership.

without looking at it.... new axle, possibly spindle, wheel bearing, depends on how hot the rotor got may want to have that turned if you get vibration in the brakes. pics would help a lot

pics will be in. i will obviously need a spindle because the shaft is snapped off (shaft on spindle), wheel bearing, and some brake pads. maybe rotor. but why would i need an axle and cv joint?

a hub bearing is the wheel bearing and its attached to the studs. its all one piece. the bearing will have splines on the inside im pretty sure all fwd cars are hub style bearings because they have to be. i cant think of any other style off the top of my head and if im wrong im sure someone will be along to tell me about it shortly. anyways the axle slides through the bearing and has threads on it to which mounts the nut that you spoke of that is no longer attached...

I will replace the bearing but I am wondering what all I will need to fix everything. New axle? or just the cv joint? wheel bearing. the rotor and pads look fine. Just wanting to know what all to order.

You could, its only 10 mins. I drove mine 30 minutes when my wheel bearing was shot, my wheel was wobbling all over the place too.

If you change it yourself, you have to get a wheel bearing puller, Advanced has them to rent out, but you will probably also need a press. I started to do mine one time and I didnt have a press, the bearing would NOT come out. So in the end I just took it to a shop and let them mess with it. It only cost $100.

i think ill take just the hub assembly to a shop and let them press it. do i need both the axle an cv joint? or just the cv joint? the axle wasnt too much of a pain changing last time so maybe new axle as well.

I doubt you could get just the outer CV joint for any cheaper than an entire rebuilt axle. Plus, the work involved in disassembling the axle to replace the outer...Wait...The outer CV and the axle shaft aren't seperate pieces. It's just damn foolishness not to replace the whole axle. You should be able to get one for under $100. How the hell do you snap the stub axle? That photo is insane!

thats what i was thinking. ive never seen or heard of the outer axle cv joint shaft snapping like that. i guess when the wheel bearing got hot, it weakend it. and with the donut tire on, it makes the bearing ride different do the the size and angle the car was leaning. but i really dont get it.

You definately need a new axle, I replaced my drivers side axle due to a torn CV boot and it was only $50ish from CarQuest, but there is a $40 core charge from them.

ok. wait...wouldnt they have warenties on them? if so i just got mine 2 mounths ago so i should be able to get it free with a core charge.

something on the intake came unplugged. i thought it was serious. i took the intake off and put it back on and it ran fine. so this is my only problem now. idrc about headers at this moment
