Sorry, quick noob question again

I can't get a good straight answer on this one. I searched my online parts catalogs etc, and I keep getting a mixed answer.

I have a 95' Talon TSi AWD AUTOMATIC. The teeth on the starter and whatever the starter attaches to are ground down to nothing.

What part has the teeth on it? First I went to Autozone, and the part they gave me was for a 420a. Then when I went to order a flexplate, half of them had teeth and half didn't. The same with the torque converter, half had teeth in the pictures and half didn't. Which is it, I want the part that has teeth on it!

You are looking for the Torque Converter. It will run you $200-$500. Are you sure the teeth are completely ground down? The teeth on the TC are usually pretty small. Make sure you get the right TC otherwise the teeth won't match-up. If you are buying a TC you might want to just get a rebuilt one from one of the many vendors that support our community.

Ive never seen teeth on a torque converter. Torque convertors bolt onto the FLYWHEEL which is what has the teeth that your asking about. The solenoid on the starter pushes out the gear on the starter where it engages the teeth on the flywheel, where in turn it turns the crank and BOOM the motor fires. Hope that helps.

Type "flywheel ring gear" in google. This it the part your looking for. Sometimes, the ring gear is separate from the flywheel. But, most are welded to the flywheel or pressed on the flywheel. So, you just purchase a flywheel at Autozone, etc. The teeth ont he gear are pretty small. Something must be going on, such as the starter not being aligned correctly with the flywheel, in order for the teeth to be ground down on both the starter and flywheel ring gear. Sometimes, when the engine is running you can hear the flywheel ring gear rubbing up against the bell housing, etc. and this can also cause the teeth to wear out. Do you hear any such noises? I would definitely find out why the gears are wearing down before installing a new flywheel and starter. Hope this helps.

The original owner had the starter replaced because I guess he ground the starter, but it also damaged the ring gear. Also, the new starter was incorrectly installed (aka, CROOKED) so it destroyed the new starter as well.

So, I replaced the starter again and hoped it'd work, but the ring gear was also damaged. Since I didn't have time to pull the trans and get in there, I kept using the car until I ground the teeth down to nothing. Now it doesn't start.

The reason it was grounding down is because the ring gear was damaged in the first place. I am getting ready to fix it, but I need to know what part I need to get because I want to have the part ordered and ready when I take it apart.

I'd say shes f*****... your gonna need a torque job eliminator... with the mass crank valve.. im sorry but its a must and it may be pricey

I seem to have mixed answers here too. So, I checked Kiggly racing and their flexplates have no teeth, but O'Reilly's have teeth. So, which is it? Is there a separate ring gear for these things? Does anyone have a diagram? Thanks!

The part you are looking for is a flex plate flywheels are for manual transmission. the torque converter bolts to the flex plate.Some times the flex plate is sold with the ring gear sometimes it is not . Get the flex plate with the ring gear. Sometimes you need to put shims on the starter where it bolts up. if not the drive gear on the starter will incorrectly come in contact with the ring gear wearing it out

Sweet thanks, I was unsure if there were different flexplates for cars such as AWD etc. I did think there were, but I didn't know.

I looked at the installation diagram, and it mentions nothing about shimming, how do I correctly shim it, if it needs it?

Sorry about that using the shims old car (chevy,ford) technology. Just replace the starter and flex plate (with ring gear) and you'll be good to go.

Thank you all, that's what I was looking for! However, that picture looks like the ring gear is welded to the torque converter.

However, now I have another question. So....where can I find a freakin flexplate? I tried Rockauto, Kiggly Racing, Autozone, Checker, etc. etc. I even checked Mitsubishi and they "didn't have it." I went to Autozone and it was for a 420a. Then I went to Checker and they "had it, but couldn't order it." Then Rockauto had nothing and Kiggly only had a 6bolt one.

I think some of us (myself included)has been giving you bad advise. I took a look at the pictures tonight and your right the ring gear is welded to the torque converter. The converter bolts to the flex plate. That could be the confusion between the different parts houses.I went to DSM graveyard they had automatic tranny parts. try the local transmission shops. That could be of some help. Sorry for the confusion.( I run a manual transmission in my 92 eclipse.) If the other owner had the transmission or engine taken out of the car he might not have replaced the starter plate back in between the engine and trans.This will make the engine and trans sit to close together possible causing the starter to wear out.Fwd and AWD use the same part. hope this helps
