Ok, I am not going to try try to "convert" any of you hardcore performance driven streetracers to ricers. And I am not going to preach to you about how your "jerks" for making fun of us kids and our fascination with loud, abnoxious, shiney things flying down the high way. Rather, I would juts like to make a statement, one of which I will never bring up again, but would like to say it at least once while a member of this forum...
Now I have read all the anti-rice and pro-rice threads on this sight and i realize its been driven into the ground, which is why im not beating on it, simpily offering a new perspective coming from someone growing up in the new era of performance and moddification. And yes I have read the DSM creed and rules, blah blah blah...no need to re post!
We all bash rice in this forum, saying its "fast and the furious" BS, and that its dumb, and pointless, and that our money can be spent else where. In some ways i agree with this. Now i come from a long line of car lovers, my father owns a 1969 Chevelle Malibu with a 350 small block. His friends owns a 1968 Chevele SS with a 454 big block. I know about horse power, v8's and serious performance. However my dad recently told me he would like to see some underbody neons on my 2g eclipse. This surprised me because he is a muscle car guy. And this made me think...
In my dad's era of car moddification they had rice as well. I hear stories all the time about him and his friends building up small blocks, running open headers, driving obnoxious, and illegal street racing after car shop in school. No more than we do now. The difference is we have more money than they did when they were kids, and more technology. When the first "hot rods" came out it was revolutionary. It was something no one had seen before. A form of personalization on a vehicle. Not every one liked it and I am sure there were a lot of guys that felt that it was pointless and the money spent on fender flairs, chopping and channeling, lowering, and flame jobs could have been put into a new big block. This is exactly how us ricers are, we are coming up on an age where all cars from all companies look damn near the same. They all have the same features and are boring. Rice in my mind is just tricking an import to make something more than just another import. Although we all know that these kids my age driving their hondas with miss matched body kits and 12" wide mufflers buzzing around the streets like a swarm of bumble bees can be irrotating and obnoxious. (kind of like rock and roll was obnoxious to my grandarents) However i give them props. They are trying to do somthing cool with the limited funds they have. To me a loud muffler is just a way of makeing your car talk to other cars. It says "hey ilike cruising". This may seem corny but its true. How do people know your into cars, if your driving somthing that looks the same as every other japanese import?
The moral of my novel is simpily, think twice about bashing the rice. Becasue although it may not be "high performance" it is a personal statement and some of us are just better at making statements than others.
