Chicoutimi,
I want your input on something guys:

Car runs fine and strong @ 15psi till 5500RPM, then theres a ton of knock and timing is obviously pulled... so the car feels very sluggish just past 5.5K.

BTW, plugs and wires are new, car has no boost creep, and is on the stock fuel system.

Now, I want to know if I could see some improvement on top end by just putting in a Walbro 190lph. (i.e. could this reduce knock?)

N.B. I dont want "get a good tune" and "get a log" as a reply please, I just want my setup to be safe but on the cheap side...

Thanks

If the issue is overrunning the pump then yes, but I seriously doubt you are at only 15psi on a 14b. BLT yet? Plugs gapped to 0.028"? CAS set so that base timing is at 5* BTDC? Any CELs?

Adding a pump won't change the way the ECU manipulates the fuel and timing, it will just make more fuel available for it to use.

N.B. You need a log to know what's really going on. You also may require a tune to fix your problem. Nobody wants to help someone who refuses to help themselves or to take the correct path to fix their problem.

I want to help... really I do.

Thanks for the info guys,
BTW my plugs are properly gapped, the timing is right and car has no BL.

Now I think i'm gonna try the pump anyways. But should I expect other consequences other than higher fuel consumption? (which doesn't bother me that much) Because I don't have any tuning device and I dont plan buying one.

thanks again

As per your request, I won't give you the correct suggestions. But I will say that if you know what your AFR and IDC values are reading at 5500rpm and above, you will know if you are out of fuel and in need of a bigger pump, or if you have other issues to address.

Or at least someone here could have a look and give you some guidance rather than a shotgun approach.

Re-read the 2nd half of Zack's first post...it makes a lot of sense ;)

EDIT:

I highly doubt you're out of fuel because of the stock pump (with a data logger that shows how much air your flowing, I'd know for sure LOL. If you are just gonna guess at the problem instead of investing in at least some FREE datalogger software (like MMcD), I'd start with the fuel filter rather than the pump, especially if it's never been changed)

I actually changed the fuel filter recently, and the stuff it had inside was rusty as hell. Maybe I should check the filter at the pump to see if it's clogged or something.

Again, I don't have a logger, but I know how cars behave and I'm clearly out of fuel above 5.5k, but I agree with all of you I should get a some kind of AFR readings etc...

In the end, all I wanted to know is: Is there any chance a 190lph could solve my problem? If it can then I dont mind spending the 100bucks or so.

Thanks again guys

I'm clearly out of fuel above 5.5k

Or you have something resonating or knocking at high RPM's that the knock sensor is picking up which is causing timing to be pulled, or you have voltage/spark issues (voltage dropping off at higher RPM's), or your plugs aren't gapped correctly and you have spark blow-out, or you really are out of fuel but it's not the pump's fault (injectors have deposits causing lower than optimal flow at higher IDC's, restricted lines somewhere limiting flow at higher IDC's, voltage to the pump is dropping at higher RPM's, etc.), or....

Is there any chance a 190lph could solve my problem

Well yeah...there's always a chance. There's also a chance it won't.

Spend $100 and find out (and spend some more later when you realize a 255hp would have been a better long-term investment). If it doesn't solve your problem, spend $100 on the next thing and see if that does it.

Or don't spend anything yet (other than whatever's needed for a cheap-a$$ Palm if you don't have one and nobody will donate one, and a cable)...download MMcD for free...and find out EXACTLY what is going on. :thumb:

Don't take it personally...I'm just a smart-ass when the proper course of action seems overly obvious to me :D
