I got a great deal on a used trans off a 1999 gsx 5 speed. Supposedly low miles and no leaks / grinds. I got it in the mail a few weeks ago and went through all the gears with it on the garage floor. I put it in the car a few days ago and today I finally got around to hooking up the reverse sensor, speed sensor, and the shifter cables / the cable bracket. I got in the car ( clutch line not even hooked up ) and went through all the gears with the car up on jackstands. 1-4 went fine but 5th wouldn't click in. It feels like there's a wall seperating neutral to 5th. I then tried reverse and it was hard to move the shifter over as well but it clicked in. I tried unhooking the cables again and manually shifting through the gears on the trans, however now 5th won't work either and its hard to pull the selector up towards reverse too. It worked fine before it was installed, however I have done tons of trannies on this car and never had a problem like this. What should I check for? I used my stock 1997 reverse sensor but that shouldn't affect it at all. I'm totally clueless what's wrong.

i'm not sure if your method of checking the tranny for shifting problems is the best. when i did my tranny swap, the 5spd transmission i had wouldn't let me go into third i believe, and you couldn't spin the input shaft for more than a revolution before it would get stuck. i threw it in the car anyways and 3,000 miles later its still 100%.

i wouldn't try to judge anything before you have a properly working setup. just my opinion though

well I figured if it binds up there's a problem, however today I tried shifting it into 5th again and it went in. Maybe it's fine ... guess I'll just wait and see when I take it for a drive in a few days.
