I've asked before about smoke coming from behind my intake manifold, but now I got smoke coming from other places and I'm tired of dealing with it. I was more or less told to check the I'M gasket (even though it was new) which I haven't done since this is my daily driven car and haven't had a chance. I now got smoke coming from the oil line going in the top of my turbo, I'm guessing it's not tight enough, but it's only been smoking from their for about 2 weeks. I also got smoke coming from my exhaust, I've seen white smoke (I so hope it's not my head gasket), but my wife and one of my friends said it was a gray/ blue color. I got 1,714.2 miles on the engine, and the exhaust smoke has only been going on for maybe the last 400 or so miles. I don't get on the gas too hard or evn very often since I got the damn 6-bolt random misfire crap, idle surge, and need new motor mounts. Anyone have any suggestions? I'm at the end of my thoughts....

White/blue/gray out the tailpipe is likely oil from the turbo leaking into the turbine side. The colors vary depending on the type of oil you use. Conventional usually burns blue. Synthetic usually burns a grayish-white.

Did you try to tighten the line yet? Have you checked the turbo for any shaft play? Is there any oil in any of the piping? Does the engine burn/use oil? Have you done a compression check?

I'm still useing non-synthetic oil due to rebuild.

I haven't had a chance to do anything with it due to my work schedule lately, and this is my only car at the moment since my wife had to drive out to TN for a month. The engine is burning oil though I think. I'll check the rest tonight after work.

Well, all the smoking crap is on hold now, my driver side engine mount decide to break on my way to work. Cam gears started shaving all the metal since the damn engine dropped from the mount breaking. I'm so close to selling this DSM and trying to find a new one.

Hang in there man I've had a lot of problems with my dsm 2 but hey we like modding our cars right so theres always gonna be that chance of something going bad...
As far as the leak make sure u tighten the feed line down, since it's a recent build so that's the only place I can think that oil could be getting in.

Well I got my new mount on finally last night and drove home with one of my friends following me incase something else happened. I later asked him about the smoke color and he said it was a bluish gray, so I'm relieved it's not white. So now I just have to find the damn cause of the burning oil. After I replaced the mount, I took the time to swap out my spark plugs with the ones I bought a while back with the part number everyone insists upon using in our cars. I also checked each piston top for oil, like was mentioned in an earlier post on here, no oil on the pistons, so there's a good sign. Yesterday I ordered some new throttle body shaft seals, and a new throwout bearing so hopefully I'll get those issues taken care of, can only hope at this point. I didn't run a compression test because I didn't even think about it, yet my tester was in the back seat. Still need to buy a boost leak tester. The more I think about the rebuild, the more I keep thinking I didn't torque the intake manifold bolts al the way :aha: :hmm:
Could that lead to burning oil? I know it'd be a major boost leak though. I don't seem to have boost issues while driving either. Just the damn smoking crap. Thanks all

:dsm:

Intake manifolds see high pressure during boost that can pressurize crankcase unless vented properly. Stock PCVs can be overwhelmed. The additional blow-by can cause smoking issues as oil gets into intake. Also, this will cause oil to leak anywhere it can.

Catch cans are a good solution for this condition. Krank vents are another solution but I have not tried them.

Need more information on when smoking occurs. Does it smoke more under boost or is it constant, @ idle, or decel?

It smokes on a constant basis. Normally it starts smoking after the engine warms up. It's really noticable at adle when waiting at a red light or stop sign, and goes away once I start moving, most likely because the smoke is being taken away by movement, not for stopping. Yesterday after replacing my motor mount, I started driving and it immediately smoked and left a trail o smoke while driving for a few minutes then it lessened, but was still smoking. Smoke comes from the exhaust and from both front wheel wells.

How does the car pull? Since u said when u started driving away u left smoke behind I'm thinking it can be a blown turbo... When I blew mine I would burn oil n a lot of smoke..

It feels a little sluggish, but still pulls decent in after 3500rpms. I wanted to rebuild the turbo before putting it back on the engine, but can't get it pulled apart. Seems impossible due to the bolt placement to pull the compressor housing off. I've been concidering the turbo as a possibility for the smoking issue, and want a new turbo anyway, just don't have the money for it right now (moving on Monday, and got a lot of other things that unfortunately come first).

Mine would also Boost somewhat ok but not how it was supposed to but did release a lot of smoke... Have u checked for shaft play?

I haven't checked for shaft play since I put the turbo back on the engine, 1800 miles ago. Guess I should check. I did check before I put it back on, and at times it felt like there was very minimal play (side to side), but most of the time it felt normal with no play. I'll check again later tonight and update.

Well, problem solved... I sold the car...

I still didn't get around to checking the turbo, but I know there was smoke coming from the alternator belt as well, yet it was way looser than it should have been. Hated that terrible alt belt squeal.
