smoking engine?

97 tsi awd heres the background on the car the previous owner use to drive it with a cracked valve cover.. when i bought the car and drove it i figured the smoke was the oil burning the got out from the valve well i replaced that engine is still smoking and i can see a stream of smoking coming out from somewhere below the valve cover and the manifold in the front now im hoping its not a head gasket... the car does not over heat

this is what im hoping it is.. now the engine is kind of greasy and dirty i was thinking and hoping that thats what is burning the temp from the engine is burning the greassy oily deposits and grime

oil burns a tint of blue.
coolant burns white. You are leaking coolant into your cylinder.

EDIT: before i say what i did above... How is your coolant level? Oil Level? Is the smoke coming from the Exhaust manifold?

its smoking from i belive all around the engine im using the manifold as a point of reference of a stream you have the heat sheild on the mani looking at it you look at the right theres this triangular metal piece above the heat shield and i can see a stream coming out from the top of that triangular piece like behind under there.....

i have no idea if that makes sense to you or if you understand or not if not ill take a picture of the spot im talking bout but thats not the only place the smoke is coming from

and oil level is low and dirty why because of prvious owner i havnt gotton arounf to that but the oil level is low i assume because the craked valve cover

A picture would be nice, maybe clean up your head with a pressure washer or something, at least you can see if you are leaking something.

i went out to take a picture and i see that my valve covers cracked now im mad i just bought that... let me ask this what causes a valve cover to crack?

Has it gotten worse(the grime)? Is that the place it smokes from? Is it on the manifold? Do you hear an exhaust leak?

Clean your engine as a starting place(like remove that heat shield and clean it up good(don't spray wires or lines or anything electrical ).

Anyone else can chime in if they have any ideas.

im talking about that metal piece above the mani is coming from back there but i also relized when i changed the valve cover i over tighted a bolt and when i took a few runs down the street (i hate to just see it sit) i craked it

You might want to torque them to the right ft/lbs. You probably need a new VC(if you cracked it) and make sure you tighten them correctly and get the VC gasket on nice and good.

EDIT: if it's not cracked you probably need a new VC gasket and correctly install it.

Oh wow, sorry i meant a new valve cover I will change that. I need to go to bed...

dont feel bad im on no sleep if you couldnt tell by the erlier posts ..... the valve cover is cracked and i just replaced it the valve cover gasket got less then a mile on it i cant post a picture because its in another thread in the hang out but it is cracked

Is an OEM gasket? I don't think it would hurt to put some gasket sealer around it. I think it's grey Probably RTV something, ask somebody or a parts store. But defiantly make sure its a OEM gasket.
P.S maybe ask or search what gaskets are good and how to install them efficiently and properly.

RTV will make the leak worse clean the channels the gasket sit in really good.
I used oem gaskets when i replaced mine and have no leaks.
Try putting some indian head gasket sealer over the crack

Did not know that.. Could have swore i saw grey silicone stuff around my VC on my 92' bone stock Eclipse.

You can use it over the half moon plugs and corners of the cam caps but thats it.

the gasket was a estatic gasket or something EBAY

Valve cover bolts are suppose to be torqued to 3 to 5 lbs max. If you over tightened it that's why it cracked, not driving it around the block. Pick up a New valve cover and gasket. With the cracked one on spray that spot with engine degreaser and clean it with a rag and tooth brush. Take it around the block and see where that gunk is coming from. Then fix it.

In the future you should make your own thread man. It sounds like you could have a bad seal in your turbo. Best thing to do is check the shaft play in the turbo. Just pull off the intake tube and stick your finger in the inlet on the turbo and see if you can move the shaft.
