Smokes at idle but not while driving?

Just testin the waters here I dropped a motor in and it didnt smoke well after about 100 miles I ran it up to like 120 on the highway. Now it smokes like crazy definately oil but only when I come to a stop while Im driving not even a little bit? Now this motor sat for about 2 years and the head was black and the inside of the intake manifold was a nice black tar like substance yuck. Now next up is a compression test and such but what do you guys think. I have a goiod head I will prolly get redone and throw on to see if its the vstem seals or what. Its just wierd it can smoke that bad at a light and never in between. Can bad egr do this? Other tan that it runs good and I cant complain as its just a motor to get me by til I rebuild my old one. Lemme know thanks P
 
classic symptoms of a blown turbo. If it only does it at idle then thats most def your turbo seals going out or gone.

It's your valve stem seal. Same thing happed to me a year ago. I dropped on a fresh head and smoking was gone.
 
Well if its a blown turbo thats cool cuz I still have the 14 on this motor havent put the gt30 on yet but I was thinking bad valve stem seals too cuz when I had bad seals in my turbo I was smoking even driving. Thanks Guys
 
I have a condition like this as well. The harder I run the car the more it smokes. It's only noticeable at idle since that's when I'm not moving. The turbo is brand new and the head is brand new as well. The motor is rebuilt and has good compression. If I pop the hood I can't track down where the smoke is coming from even ... it basically dissappears until I close the hood again. Very strange ... I hope it's just everything breaking in or something like that :thumbdown
 
well tonight i found my valve cover was cracked also did you knoiw there ia a small yhole drilled by plug number 1 ghuh nevetr knew that. B8t still waiting on a comp check to tell further!
 
For archive reasons it turned out to be bad seals in the turbo. I have yet to touch the motor except to install cams. I must say Im very pleased and surprised it has held up this long. I plan on a rebuild this winter for more power but it has held 30 psi on the dyno several times and alot of overheating. Along with the way only I can beat her she has surpassed my expectations.
 
im having the same trouble but i got a new head new piston rings and pistons and i bought a new turbo but im a lil iffy about the turbo because it has some play and i found oil in the hot side but it smokes some and goes away and mostly in idle
