Sorry if this is a bit lengthy, but I hate vague, non-informative questions...
So, I've been working on this problem for quite some time now. My car lets out a puff of blue smoke during shifts and occasionly while coasting to a stop. Common sense would tell me that this is a valve seal problem and I've actually had a local import car shop (not really a performance shop, but very reputable) perform a leakdown test to confirm my suspicions. They told me that I was leaking 10% from my valve seals.
Then I talked to another shop a couple hours away that specializes in DSM's (englishracing.net) to get a quote on replacing the valve seals. He told me that smoke during shifts normally isn't due to bad valve seals and that bad seals usually smoke during idle.
Now, I'm confused... regardless, I'm planning on having the valve seals replaced. My question is could an overly tightened BOV increase the chance of smoke during shifts, especially if you've already got a 10% leak from the valve seals??
I know that the most common result of an overly tightened BOV is compressor surge, but I'm not hearing the turbo surging. The BOV has a nice, strong release sound sometimes, and other times sounds kinda weak or non-existant (during similar boosting situations).
Conditions:
-I've currently got a small boost leak coming from my shaft seals in the TB, but pressure seems to hold pretty good, dispite the leak, when performing a BL test.
-PCV system is OEM routed with an inline check valve installed between PCV valve and IM.
