Recently I purshased a 91 tsi with 144k.The car was only driven by the previous owner about 5000 miles in 3 years.Well the car was smoking at an idle and the owner said it was geting worse the more he drove it.The car has been adult owned and bone stock. So I went to work on it pulling the head and doing valve job thinking it was valve seals.Wile at it did all the things you should do when at that stage water pump,Timmingbelt,ML head gasket,ARP head studs. After geting it back together it fired right up no problems. But after I drove a little ways to warm it up same thing ocurred blue smoke at idle and when leaving from a stop. Here are things that I checked befor anyone asks. New OEM pcv valve checked out fine. Compression 140-150 across (yes with throttle open),New Valve seals,Not turbo idled with turbo off and still blue smoke out of manifold.Oil Im using is 10-30 Moble 1 full synth. The car will not smoke crusing down the road or at WOT.Also will not puff smoke when unloaded pulling Vac. and quikly opening throttle. The longer it sits at idle the more it smokes.Any ideas would help. Thanks

The compression isn't too bad and props to you for telling us what you've done so far. I'd like for you to re-do your compression test (make sure the motor's warm) and get a baseline once again. Once you've done that, drop a teaspoon of oil into each cylinder as you re-check compression and let us know what those numbers are. If they go up, you're suffering from leakdown through the rings. A leakdown test would also confirm this.

Let us know what you find and also check the turbo for shaftplay although I don't think that's your issue.

Unclear if the problem changed after your rebuild or stayed the same. Was it blue smoke before aswell?

If it wasn't blue before and now it is, you installed something wrong as you are now burning oil.

You dont see blue smoke when driving because it shoots out the exhaust and breaks into the atmosphere faster than you can notice it.

You can try to throw some Lucas Oil Stabilizer in there to see if that'll seal off any leaks. I dont know too much about the stuff anymore after bobtheoilguy's tests. Its still in my car but I am coming up on an oil change in the next few hundred miles.

Was it blue smoke before as well?............. Yes it was

check the turbo for shaftplay although I don't think that's your issue.....No shaft play. Also at idle with turbo off there is blue smoke out of manifold.Telling me its no a turbo issue.

Unclear if the problem changed after your rebuild or stayed the same.....The problem has stayed the same.

Thanks for the replies.I will do the comp. test again. Also a leakdown test.Ill check the all-data for psi and duration of leakdown.

Did you use Mitsu valve seals? I rebuilt the head on my old laser for the same problem, put it back together and it still smoked. I used an off-brand valve-seal the first time, second time I went with Mitsu, and it worked like a charm. Just my .02

Yes new guides and Mitsu. seals.....Thanks for the reply's everyone........
