Hello, I have a 1999 Eclipse RS that my brother and I have owned since 99. The car is stock, never raced or abused. Have always tried to do the general maintenance on time. It is currently my daily and has 190,000 on the odometer.
I failed California smog yesterday at Idle HC (ppm) the allowed max is 100. I got measured at 140. %o2 idle measured at 0.3 and 0.1 at 2500 rpm not sure if that’s normal? I will attach a photo I put 25 for my failed smog from yesterday and 23 for my previous passed smog from 2023.
The smog guy said it didn’t fail by much. That it could be spark plugs or PCV valve. The only problem is I did the spark plugs about 10 months ago along with the spark plug wires, PCV valve, air filter as well. I did both o2 sensors before taking it to get smogged yesterday. I also did Lucas fuel injector 2 weeks ago and cataclean last week.
Last year I did get the p0420. But I took the cat off cleaned it and the honeycomb visibly looked good, changed the leaky cat gaskets and the p0420 code was gone for like 6 months. It came has came and gone like 4 times in the last year. I wasn’t too concerned because it wasn’t in the year I had to smog it.
My question is do you guys think there’s anything I can do to get within the 100 HC (ppm) just to pass smog and avoid getting a new cat? My fear is buying a new cat then it goes bad quickly because the car is older and probably burns oil. Since I need to top it every so often.
And if you guys suggest I get the Catalytic converter? Any particular brand or model I should look for. I’m in California. My bad for the long explanation but I tried to provide as much info as possible. Thanks in advance
Here is the pictures of my smog results.
