I had a tranny put in by some kid who well the deal ended in bad terms and him having it 7 months. So anyway, I get the car back and it seems to slip up to like 2.5-3k. I dont think it is in limp mode because when it does go I can manually shift it and it'll downshift into the next gear when driving. Another thing Im noticing is it doesnt seem to engage, like the rpms dont go down from when in park. Id say 80% or more of the time it does this but I have had it actually engage ok for me periodically. When Im going at a decent speed and kick down, it does take off like it doesnt slip. One thing it did last night was after 5k or so in second it just free revved, but after it downshifted and everything was fine. I pulled it into the driveway and at idle rpms were at 1.5k and it just free-revved like no tranny was there. Now I know something is definately wrong but what? Tranny fluid is ok...I think. I dont know what the proper way to check it is but my other car is checked it warm and in park so that's what I did and it read full. Any comments? I dont know whether I got a bad tranny to begin with or that the kid that installed it wanted to screw some things up before I got it back. Either way Im pretty screwed with it I think.

It almost sounded like you had a high stall converter but not the free revving, that doesnt make sense. What exactly did he do with your tranny/ supposed to do?

he was just supposed to put in the new/used tranny i gave him to swap. thats all.

nope...I dont know that part. Lol why are you asking me these questions? Buying used from anyone you dont know what you're getting. Having to sue the kid that was working on your tranny because he doesnt return your calls, PMs etc for a good 4 months, doesnt help the situation either. So like I said, I cant tell whether I got a bad one to begin with or he decided to screw me over before I got the car back. I just want an opinion on what it could be...internally, electrically, whatever.

Edit: Ah... I guess maybe you didnt know I had it shipped to me from someone from tuners for 600 bucks.

I personally know the "kid" who "screwed" you. I'm not going to make a big flame fest out of it but it was a bad situation for both of you. Your car is the rustiest car ive ever seen and almost every bolt on it was seized. He put in the trans you gave him and I'm positive that he didnt screw with it in any way. He was just glad to get it out of his garage. From what I heard you were unwilling to take into consideration the fact that your car took at least 5 times as long as a non rusted to hell car would take and he ate all of that cost.

It sounds like your transmission or torque converter is bad. Did you buy a new torque converter when you got the trans done? Or did the new trans come with one? If you reused the original one that could have been your problem all along.

To be honest, it's been so long that I dont remember if it came with a TC or not. Im pretty sure it did though. Six hundred would be alot for a tranny without one and I know better than to put a TC from a blown tranny on a new one. Id prefer not to get in a flamefest either. I figured he may have screwed me over because I heard from a few people that was exactly what he was planning to do at the meet at Autosound. Apparently he was all bragging about it and stuff. Yes we both got screwed over on it. I told him Id pay him for parts and crap almost up until I got the car back, well I had it relayed to him. Having to sue someone to get your car back because he's too much of an ass to respond to me for 4 months is another issue. His roomate, Albert was telling me that he had no intentions there for awhile of even working on the car. So yeah take from that what you will. Anyway, it does sound like something is horribly wrong. I just figured from the deal going wrong, people telling me he was gonna try to screw me over and now alot of bolts missing or lose on the car, that it may have been him who messed things up for me. Im not trying to point fingers here tho...Im just trying to figure out what's wrong with it so I can spend more money and time on something I should have tried to fix myself. :notgood:

Edit: And btw that was not true that I was unwilling to take into consideration the time it took to finish the car. If he would have been working on the car the full 7 months it took rather than just the first 3 then I would have had sympathy for that. Like I said, I offered to pay him for things numerous times but he was too much of a douche to even talk to me. There's just too much crap about it that I'd rather not make this post continue to be about. Im done with it and him...Id just like to get the car running again.

yea id say TC is bad...you may be taking out that tranny all over again, sorry bro

How can you tell that it is exactly the TC? I know some things about the inner workings of trannies but Im not really one for diagnosing the problem. Just wondering if it definately sounds like that is the problem or just a guess. Id hate to do all the work to replace the TC and then it be the tranny instead. Thanks for all the replies though.

Another thing to consider is what tranny fluid was put in it? If the wrong fluid is in there it could cause problems leading up to tranny failure.
