hey everyone, I want to get a project car to work on while in school. I found a 97 eclipse RS with 155,xxx on the body and 65,xxx on the motor for sale. It overheats when idling and grinds 5th gear. I think i can get it for around $600.. Do you think I should do it and how much do you think it would cost to fix everything? THANKS

I think you should for sure buy it and NOT drive or fix it up. PART IT OUT my dude. Make some cash towards the GSX. Plus you get to strip it completely down to nothing so you will learn a lot also.

Tell the dude selling it you have $450 cash for him and see if he bites.

If he does, then part it out. But do it fast, don't let the car sit around for a year or longer. It will become a major eye sore to the neighbors hahaha anyways overall do what you want to do....

If you get this car I am willing to throw out a prediction
You'll get it, YAY dsm's!!
put alot of money and time into it (damn dsm's)
get it running, and drive it, and develop the idea that not only are dsm's a pain in the ass to work on and full of problems, there's no reward to owning one, its a slow ass N/A turd!!
likely result....a dsm hater.
You won't get any of the good things of a dsm from this car, and alot of the bad.
I'll say it again, buy a honda if you can't buy a turbo 4g63.

I know where that RS belongs..thedsmgraveyard.com

Don't buy that car. I hope to god you don't waste your time and money on it. If you look hard enough, you'll find a 2ga tsi for 1k-2k with some work needed (tires, brakes, whatever) but nothing like taking a shot in the dark tracking down a cooling issue on a car that has 0 YES ZERO potential!

If you do buy it, I may need some interior parts in the near future. So after you figure the headgasket is too much trouble and want to part it out. lmk! ;) jk

Actually, that's by far the best idea here!:thumb:

I need a door skin :D

For $600 I would. Shit, maybe tell him $500 and then if you got a couple cheap problems to fix no big deal you might have a good running car for cheaper than you think! For all you know maybe it just needs a radiator flush or some new coolant LOL & bam the over-heating problem is fixed!

Granted it might be more for that, but like someone said above $600 will get you the interior of a car LOL $600 is a STEAL

Yeah it'd be a AMAZING to get a GST/ GSX for $650 but c'mon, those deals are pretty rare and you should pat yourself on the back if you got one!

the OP said he planned to boost it some time down the road. I say part it out and use the money towards something that has a diff and snail. :thumb: Much more fun IMO!

I wish I had the opportunity to buy a running DSM for $600 I'd jump right on it even if it has a couple problems what do you honestly expect it's a $600 car LOL

I bought my 98 N/T 125k miles with a couple problems for $1500 but it was worth it to me the 2G body and it was only a couple hundred to fix the problems.

$600 + another few hundred = you may have a good car.

You may not, it's all a gamble really. But it looks like a good 1 to me :)

No is my advice. My friend in high school owned one and its an ok car to get from a to b from. Coming from the honda scene, thats the equivilant of buying an accord to use for a project car LOL...they are better as commuters than projects. Im sure there is a fair amount you can do to a 420a motor but there is more reward to come out of a 4g63.
