Shifting rpms

I am just curious what rpms you shift at when just cruising, not accelerating hard. I know it may be a weird question, but I am very new to dsm's. I am use to american muscle cars and having a lot of low end torque and usually have the rpm's lower when cruising, but being able to accelerate. The way i drive right now in my talon i can cruise but when i accerate there is a kind of clicking noise and goes very slow. I am pretty sure that is just stressing the engine. thank you for the replies.

While cruising I always shift at redline.


























Just kidding . I usually shift around 3500, mayb 4ish depending on the traffic. I try to keep the crusing rpms around 2800 - 4000 cause the engine isnt loud, but when you tap the peddle you get the torque.

3000 for good gas milage.
3000 on the highway.

When just driving I never go over 3,000. I get on it alot and always get over 25mpg.

thank you all for the replies. i have always shifted at 3k. I only romp on it occasionally but i still get 16-18 mpg. anything else could be the problem?

it doesnt really matter because the engine is strong enough to handle alot of rpm's but for gas mileage purposes, 3000-3500 is probably the best.

wow, that is some bad mileage. I get 27MPG on my car, but I do about 250 highway miles out of 300 before I fill back up. Back in the day when I used to race I still got 22MPG average between track time and highway getting there.

Usually 4th but sometimes i can get away with 5th as long as it isn't up hill.

if im cruisin i shift at 3000 rpm.at 40-45 i'm usually in 5th.It's funny,i drive my turbo alot lighter then when i had my NT.

I've never looked at a tach to shift. If the motor's loafing, upshift. If it's laboring, downshift. If you're trying to get the most acceleration out of it, upshift when the power tapers.
