Shift Linkage and Tranny Problems

Ok guys im still a newbie to dsm's so i could use some direct help i have tried searching the info to help and found info but none i thought was really helpful.

I have a 92 tsi awd, and i bought the car with a frechly rebuilt tranny it had less than 500 miles on the rebuilt one, it slowly developed a small grind when i went from 1st to 2nd when i was on it at all in 1st gear or if i down shifted into 2nd from third. I decided to put new shift bushings that were brass and not rubber since i got them for free and then the problem got worst it does the same thing but now it wont even go into first i have to launch from 2nd gear. if anyone knows what the problem could be please let me know. thanks

first and second utilize the same shift fork, your shift fork might be bent or damaged.


If thirds and 4th shift fine then I do not think it is your linkage. When you completely depress the clutch pedal does it disengage the clutch? Your clutch might not be releasing, this could cause your gears to grind.

i agree that the clutch not releasing would cause them to grind, but would that keep it from going into first in general?

Yes it wont go in at all if it isn't releasing all the way. Can you get it in first if you turn the car off?

need a little more info.

did you replace the bushings at the transmission or the shifter or both? are you pushing the clutch all the way to the floor? Once you get going, can you rev match first gear to put it in that way?

is the clutch feeling sluggish? check the fill on it? anything else simple, check it first before moving on to the trans itself. Doesnt really sound like it has anything to do with the bushings really if it will go into other gears but, hard to tell at this point.
