I bought a Mitsubishi Evolution 2 with 92,000KMS' on it with very good compression, rust free in perfect condition. Upon purchase I ordered a GATES timing belt kit and didn't feel 100% comfortable doing it myself so I took it to a dealership to get done, this way I have zero headache and I am insured its done correctly.

Well upon picking vehicle up after timing belt/water pump had been done on it I got 10 blocks away when i noticed temp gauge was 7/8ths on the water temp gauge, I immediately pulled over/turned off vehicle and felt rad and it was ice cold, I could not feel any coolant levels. I took off the cap and it was all steam there was absolutely no coolant in the system. After this I returned car and demanded a comp test and a coolant flush, they stated it had 140 compression across the board on a cold motor.

A few weeks down the road on a Road trip after making it 2 and half hours away from home car dies out with a huge exhale of air, I pull over and cant find any boost leaks/vacuum leaks and the car just cranks and sounds like its got no compression. I got it towed back($80) then towed to the dealership($60) and then later that day find out that a nut was finger tightened and unthreaded itself in the timing compartment to shoot through my belt and skip intake cam gear off by 8 teeth. All intake valves are toast along with pistons having huge dibids in them.

They are now trying to sluff me off by trying to reuse the head but just resurfaced and just replace valves/intake cam. They even said that they could reuse pistons and not touch the bottom end. It's been two weeks and I have got nothing but the run around and they are trying to screw me.

Now I want your opinions/thoughts on the situation AND what I should be demanding/ even websites with information that would help me.

Thanks!

Your car should be ok as long as the pistons didn't get to jacked up. As long as there aren't any gashes on the top of the pistons they should be good. And usually when this happens you bend valves and they send it to a machine shop to have the valves replaced. Seems like they are a little slow but having the valves redone and making sure the pistons are ok sounds pretty normal for the situation. Just make sure a different tech works on it instead of the finger tightening jack ass.

The pistons have fairly deep gashes in them. Here are some pictures.

Are those little metal shavings from the valves and pistons down in there? they will want to fix their screw up as cheaply as possible, but it sounds like they want to make it right. I would insist on new valves but resurfacing the head is fine.

BUT, I would insist that they hone the cylinders and rering it with me buying the rings, and possibly having them do the bottom end for parts cost(since they will have it apart to hone the cylinders anyway). I'm just not sure about those small particals in the cylider. They wont like it but they also want to keep someone happy that they gave poor service to. wouldnt hurt to ask. good luck

the chances of getting them to do anymore than fixing what they messed up is asking a little much. granted your the one having to deal with the headache of it being down. at least your getting a free head job i guess but i highly doubt they will tear into the motor any further than they have to.

Yes, you can just replace the bent valves and reuse the head. However, I would demand that they also go thru the bottom end tho, based off that picture..

+1. i work at a KIA dealership. if we ever did that to a customers car, everything would have been replaced. for them to try and not replace at least that piston is ridiculous. they did the damage.

So I should demand the bottom end to be checked over and what test can a machine shop do to the block to ensure its good?

If those are metal shavings and such, id tell them to....

You: I want you to Deburr my pistons, clean the metal shavings..Here I also brought some oem piston rings i bought, while cleaning the pistons and shaving, rehone my cylinders and slap these bad boys in.

Him: Metal shavings, and these gaping cuts wont do any more damage, they are fine.

You: *Grabs torque wrench* *beats mechanic to death*

It's their responsibility to, at a minimum, restore the engine to the condition that it was in before the problem happened.

They should also replace the valve guides where the valves were bent.

Make them fix the bottom end. Them trying to say you don't need it just so they can get out of paying for it is bullshit. They need to be pay for what they messed up.

I cannot find anything verifying whether or not EVO 2 4g63T's have different cams than an eclipse or talon.
