I just replaced my driver side half shaft yesterday and now when I get above 55 or so the front end of my car shakes pretty bad. I don't think it's poorly balanced tires becuase the stering wheel doesn't shake much. Could the installation of the new half shaft have messed up alignment and be causing this problem?

Make sure the carrier bearing is tight and installed properly.

Yes, installing new cv axles will almost always knock the alignment out of wack. But that normally causes the car to pull one way or the other. The alignment shouldnt cause "shaking"...... My car shakes above 55 too, but it's because my tires are shot.

What are you talking about? Axles have nothing to do with alignment.

Was the half shaft new or rebuilt?

Both times that my CV shafts were replaced, my car's alignment was out. Not just a little bit, but it was a huge difference.

I guess they must have taken your tie rods out at the adjuster and not marked where they went back to. If you just pop off the ball joint it shouldn't do that.
Either way it shoudln't cause vibration.
A tire weight getting knocked off is a good possibility.

How could an axle NOT cause an alignment problem? You have to mess around with all that suspension stuff to get to it ... it needs an alignment.

With that said, once I had a new axle put in and it did the same thing you're describing. I took it back to the place I got it installed, they checked it out, and decided to replace the axle with another with the diagnosis that the 'new' one was bent, which did turne out to be the problem.

well I was the one who did the installation and I didn't take the tie rods out at the adjuster. I'm going to do the other side tommorrow then get it aligned and see if that does the trick. Thanks guys.
