I own a 1995 eagle talon Tsi fwd, automatic with 49 thousand miles on it. The only rust spots are in the engine bay and around the inside of the sunroof area from sitting by the ocean, it doesn't have any of the normal Midwest rust as it is properly stored every winter. The car sits pretty much as it came from factory other than basic things that have needed to be fixed. My question is do I keep this car and build it or try to sell it and buy something else? I paid 10k for it, it was more of a fall into my lap situation, I didn't go searching for the car. I am a beginner to building cars and just am unsure of if the car has real value being untouched or if I should just go for it with what I have.

My opinion: keep it and build it. The low mileage certainly helps the value, but not to the point of making it “too valuable to touch.” Would be more valuable if it was AWD or if it was absolutely original and pristine. If you’re concerned about mods hurting it, stick to things that can be put back to stock rather easily and don’t cut or weld the body or structural parts. Keep any original parts that you remove. Done right and done smart it will still have plenty of value (although keep in mind you almost never get your investment back when it comes to building a car). Hack jobs are what have really destroyed so many DSMs. Do your homework, learn from all the experience here, respect the car and build it for your enjoyment.

It’s getting pretty uncommon to see an all original DSM any more. And original examples are starting to get more valuable than the modified ones. I would personally keep it stock and enjoy it. But that being said, it is your car, and if you want to build/modify it then do that. Enjoy it the way you want it to be.
