i was curious to see if anyone has put a selectable transfer case on a regular trans, preferably a 2g, and just welded the center diff?? i was wanting to do this, it sounds like it will work i just want to know 100% that it will.. for those that will ask why.. with a welded center diff.. i dont want to drive around feeling that its in 4wd all the time..and of course to use on a 2wd dyno.. seems like an easy swap for a nice convenience just making sure its doable.. ive searched and havent found anything.. or even one for sale ha

hopefully GRNDSM will chime in as he says hes had alot of experience with these

The selectable x-case is a 1g part. It will work with the appropriate splined 1g transmission whether it is selectable or not, and yes, if you have a welded center diff, you can undo the bolt in the xcase and run FWD.

I miss my selectable trans/tcase combo. It was rare as balls, and I sold it with the car (stupid stupid stupid)

Well there was a thread on here saying u can change output shaft on Trans easy..I haven't tore into my autos yet but my 1g output shaft slid right out. My 2g didn't put I haven't pulled on it..worse case when I have Trans apart ill swap whatever the output shaft is splines to from the 1g

You can easily use it with 95/96 transmissions (in this way, it is no different from 91-94 trannies), you will just need a '90 output shaft. But do NOT use it with 97-99 trannies!

Other than welding your center diff, you could also use a VCE. This will allow you to easily reverse it, if you so desire. I have done this for many years.

But watch out, you shouldnt use VCE for racing with more than 500ft*lbs of torque or so.

k i bought the trans from someone but dont know what year.. any easy way to tell? also will an output out of a 5 speed work?

?? 5so? i asked if an output shaft out of a 5 speed will fit in an auto. basically is there a difference between the 2.

I brought it up..I asked a very very simple question ... are the 5 spd and auto outputs the same????? I have 90 5 spds around but the car I'm wanting to pit this on is auto............so again would the output out of the 90 5 spd fit into a 95 AUTO?

no the ratios are differendf and you must use auto rear diff and auto t-case with the auto trans.. I'm not sure about the ratio split that happened between all 1g/and 2ga carsand the different ratios of the trans and t-case that changed with the 2gb cars

go to jack's trans website, go to DSM and then at the bottom read the DSM tech articles and watch teh vieos there's a lot about seeing wehat you have without numbers off the trans since being they are so old internal parts may have been changed in their life time for other reasons

But... he didn't ask about the transfer case... There are many reasons why they are not interchangeable.

He only asked about the output shaft. Unfortunately, I do not know that answer.

my bad, i was thnking output ratios and not output splines :( ooops

but i recently read on here where a guy tried putting an auto t-case on a 5 speed trans and although things went together there were issues with a different amount of bolts to secure the different types to their respective transmissions (would fit but there was an extra botl on one) So i would be lead to believe that the output types of splins and shafts would be interchangable

Don't feel bad, it was rare, but if your making decent power, game over. Friend of mine broke one on the first pass at the track, and got another one that only lasted a few weeks. He was around 450whp/425tq at the time.

Might be ok for a lower hp car though.

I have had the opposite experience... I ran it down to 10.1 without ever breaking it. But I have brocken the stock tcase.

What did your friend break?

I'd have to ask him exactly what it was that broke, but it was the t-case both times, transmission seemed to hold up fine.

The only reason he wanted it is so he wouldn't have to deal with putting in a VCE to dyno the car, at the time there weren't any AWD dyno's in town, just flip the switch and go to the dyno FWD.

hmm i was going off of what grndsm was saying and his experience from these being stronger.. my car should be low 10's... guess ill give it a shot.. plus if i can rig one up to an automatic it "should" last longer

you said it would work with a 95-96 transmission.. mt or auto have the same transfer case ratio.. mounting would not be a problem if the hole just lined up.. i can make/cut spacers

but seems like too much trouble for that luxury.. if i could find one anyways.. o well

someone had the formula up somewhere for what you would have to do to get it to work.. pretty easy.. just difference in tire size.. too much hassle

according to the vfaq.. the 2g transfer had 1.074 ratio.. the 1g,evo,gvr4 had 1.090..didnt matter if it was MT or AUTO. but yeah the rear and front diff ratio doesnt matter as long as you use the correct multiplier to the rear ha.. o swell
